Nationwide campaign brings urgently needed food to food banks

The nationwide REWE and nahkauf food bank bag campaign 2026 ends with a strong result: 397,889 donation bags worth a total of almost two million euros go to the more than 970 food banks in Germany - a signal of solidarity in economically challenging times.

Gardening for the climate: with peat-free soils from the REWE Group

To protect the peatlands, the REWE Group now only offers soil with peat alternatives in REWE, PENNY and toom stores. Why is this important? Peat is extracted from drained moors. But only intact moors can store carbon dioxide. If peat, which has been stored for thousands of years, is extracted and used in potting soil, climate-damaging CO2 is released. Gardening without peat therefore contributes to climate protection. We explain the background to our commitment and provide tips on peat-free gardening.

New standard in hydroponic cultivation

Sustainable, innovative and longer-lasting

REWE Group is bringing lettuce mixes from hydroponic cultivation to its stores for the first time. The lettuces are grown all year round in special water basins and can therefore be produced in a particularly resource-efficient way. The result is lettuce that impresses with its quality and freshness. REWE is launching the new "Crispy Mix" salad mix in all stores in Bavaria - other varieties and regions will follow. PENNY will also start the nationwide launch at the beginning of April.

Filling plates together: Nationwide REWE and nahkauf donation campaign

Until 7 March, customers in more than 4,200 stores and in the REWE online shop have the opportunity to purchase donation bags with long-life food. Every donation will then benefit the more than 970 food banks in Germany and help to maintain their work in these challenging times.

BILLA was honoured with the "Gemeinsam Stark Award" for its commitment to creating a barrier-free working environment. The award was presented as a special prize as part of the oe24 "Next Generation Award" 2026 in Vienna.

Double win at the PETA Vegan Award for REWE and PENNY

REWE was honoured with the PETA Vegan Award 2026 in the "Best Vegan Variety" category. The animal welfare organisation recognised the comprehensive and continuously growing range of plant-based products as well as the company's clear commitment to a sustainable, vegan diet. The jury was particularly impressed by the innovative and consistently vegan products, the well thought-out brand strategy and REWE's overall coherent and credible image. PENNY will also be honoured with a PETA Vegan Award in 2026 - for an outstanding individual product.

REWE Group joins the international sustainability initiative SIFAV (Sustainability Initiative Fruit and Vegetables). REWE and nahkauf's "Gemeinsam Teller füllen" (Filling plates together) campaign shows how much can be achieved when many people get involved: As part of the two-week "Gemeinsam Teller füllen" campaign, around 330,000 bags of non-perishable food were donated and handed over to local food banks. REWE topped up the customers' donations with an additional 200,000 euros worth of food.

PENNY launches the marketing of pineapples without crowns

From September, PENNY will start marketing pineapples without crowns throughout Germany. The pineapple crown is removed during the harvest. This has advantages across the board: The crown accounts for around 25 per cent of the fruit volume, meaning that a reduction in the CO2 footprint is achieved by increasing packaging and transport efficiency. In addition, the crowns, which previously usually ended up in domestic waste, can be reused in the country of origin.

Nationwide fundraising campaign by REWE and nahkauf

Shelf-stable food for the food banks

More and more people in Germany don't know how to pay for their next purchase. The food banks have become the last hope for many - but even there things are getting tight. REWE and nahkauf are therefore once again launching the nationwide campaign "Gemeinsam Teller füllen" (Filling plates together). The aim is to collect as many food donations as possible. From 8 to 20 September, customers can buy bags of long-life food in over 4,200 stores or via the REWE online shop. These will benefit the more than 970 food banks in Germany.

New vehicles in Berlin and Neuss

Investment worth millions: REWE delivery service opts for eSprinter

The REWE delivery service is focusing on electromobility: 64 new eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz are now making deliveries in Berlin and from September also in Neuss. The vehicles are the largest single order placed by REWE Lieferservice with its new partner Mercedes-Benz. REWE Lieferservice is investing almost five million euros in vehicles and the expansion of the charging infrastructure. The new electric vehicles also make an important contribution to REWE Group's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050

Circular economy in the REWE Group

Utilise valuable raw materials for as long as possible

The global demand for resources for the manufacture of new products and materials has risen sharply in recent decades. This has consequences: The environment and climate are suffering from the high consumption of resources and the generation of waste. As REWE Group, we want to minimise these effects in our own value chains. As a Group, we are committed to science-based targets based on the 1.5-degree pathway of the Paris Climate Agreement. Our goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. How can we achieve this? For example, by developing measures with our suppliers on how we can use fewer resources. And, where possible, gradually returning products and raw materials to cycles at the end of their use. This is where REWE Group's circular economy experts come in, with the task of further developing the company's strategies and projects and adapting them to the increased requirements of new European legislation. Time to look back on what has been achieved and look ahead to tasks that still need to be solved.

Small change for the food banks

Customers can now donate coins or exchange them for vouchers in 1,150 REWE stores. The entire amount of the coins is donated to Tafel Deutschland e.V. without any deduction of fees.

In favour of preserving the moors

REWE Group favours peat-free soil

Milestone reached: REWE Group in Germany now only offers peat-free soils. The proportion of peat in potted plants is being continuously reduced. But this is just the beginning: we are also making progress in peat-free and peat-reduced plant cultivation. How we save food

REWE supports food banks with long-life food

The campaign has a long tradition, meets with a lively response every year and has already raised over 28 million euros worth of food since its launch in 2011: Since 7 October, customers in over 4,200 REWE and Nahkauf stores have once again been able to buy either paper bags with donated items or donation cards for people affected by poverty.

REWE offers animal-free cheese

Cheese without milk? It's possible! Formo's animal-free cheese alternative is now available at REWE. It does not require milk and uses koji protein, which the start-up obtains through microfermentation. The "Frischhain" products will initially be available in three varieties in the chiller cabinets.

For the first time, REWE is offering eggs from dual-purpose hens under its own "REWE Bio" brand. This is a test in 111 REWE stores in Baden-Württemberg and parts of the Palatinate. With this project, REWE is supporting more ethical and ecological poultry farming.

"A stroke of luck for my market"

When it comes to finding employees for his store, REWE salesman Tim-Marlo Kaiser faces a particular challenge at the Wolfsburg site: he has to compete with Volkswagen. The car manufacturer is a sought-after employer in the region. In order to find reinforcements for his team, Kaiser decided to take a new approach to recruiting. As part of the partial qualification project, he hired Azuka Philip Ndihika, a trained banker from Nigeria, in June 2021. Today, the 49-year-old manages the store's fruit and vegetable department with two employees.

Three million euros for inclusion in playgrounds

What is a prerequisite for equal participation of children with and without disabilities in playgrounds is by no means a reality everywhere. The "Stück zum Glück" initiative aims to change this. It collects donations to realise the construction of inclusive playgrounds. The Germany-wide fundraising campaign organised by Procter & Gamble (P&G), REWE and Aktion Mensch has now reached its self-imposed target of three million euros.

Too many noises, lights and people are a major challenge for people with autism. BILLA therefore introduced the "quiet hour" in the interests of inclusion and social interaction. During this time, acoustic and visual stimuli are minimised for customers with autism.
