Heart mission let donations gush
by Achim Bachhausen

Once again this year, nahkauf is staying true to its established tradition and donating 300,000 euros to "Bild hilft e.V./Ein Herz für Kinder". The six most efficient fundraisers among the nahkauf retailers were there at the weekend, together with their companions, when the sum was announced in front of an audience of millions at prime time.

Shop and do good

A crowd of celebrities on the red carpet last Saturday evening (6 December) in Berlin. And right in the middle of it all, between Uschi Glas and Wladimir Klitschko: nahkauf retailers from all over the country. The reason: the independent retailers donated a whopping 300,000 euros to "Ein Herz für Kinder" this year. The majority of the amount was collected during the "Heart Mission" with two focal points in June and October. "During the campaign periods, customers were able to round up their purchase amount at the nahkauf checkouts or donate an amount using a donation card," explained Mathis Neth, national nahkauf sales manager.

Many retailers used the "mission of the heart" as an opportunity to organise a wide range of activities with and for children. For example, nahkauf Drewel in Tecklenburg celebrated a Europe Festival with 1,300 boys and girls. The family of retailers has been a committed supporter of "Ein Herz für Kinder" for many years, as has Johannes Hafner, who, together with his customers, donated an impressive 7,000 euros in his nahkauf store on the island of Reichenau through donations of empties and rounded-up till amounts. Johannes Hafner: "What I find particularly great about 'Ein Herz für Kinder' is that the administrative costs are completely covered by Bild. So every cent donated is used. It goes without saying that we'll be taking part again next year."

Conclusion of an eventful year

The 25th ZDF charity gala in Berlin was once again the crowning glory of an eventful nahkauf year. Since 2009, the more than 450 nahkauf retailers have been committed to helping children in need under the proven motto "just one cent can help". Thanks to the generosity of customers and many great store campaigns - from the tombola to painting competitions and cake sales to the children's festival - well over five million euros have been transferred to the donation account since then. nahkauf is therefore one of the long-standing, loyal major donors to "Bild hilft e.V. Ein Herz für Kinder."

500 million for children in need

The internationally active children's aid organisation BILD hilft e.V. "Ein Herz für Kinder" has been supporting children in need worldwide for 47 years. Since then, over 500 million euros in donations have been collected. With 9.6 million euros, "Ein Herz für Kinder" supports medical research projects, for example.

In total, over 26 million euros were raised for a good cause at this year's gala evening.

A big gift: the nahkauf retailers and their companions had 300,000 euros in their luggage.
