With heart and hammer: Theodoros builds on toom

Uncomplicated, fast, close support - these are the words Theodoros Lazaridis uses to describe his path to self-employment at toom. in 2024, the family man opened his first Baumarkt DIY store near Stuttgart, making him one of around 30 retailers at toom. In addition to its close ties with the local economy, his store is characterised above all by its strong team, which is committed to looking after customers' needs at all times.

Cooperation with Fairtrade

In 2022, toom was the first retailer in Germany to launch a pilot project with Fairtrade Germany for more cuttings with the Fairtrade seal. Fairtrade certification brings many benefits for the workers. Our colleague Ribanna Jansen is responsible for the topic at toom and was on site in Kenya. She told us what impressions she gained from her trip and what the future plans are for the project.

Taking moorland protection further: launch of the "Alliance of Pioneers" with toom

Rewetting and simultaneous (agricultural) economic utilisation of moors - that is the goal of the "Alliance of Pioneers". Together with 13 other companies from various economic sectors, toom will initiate pilot projects in the future in close cooperation with agriculture and science and build scalable value chains based on Paludi biomass. Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir presented the toMOORow initiative with a grant of almost 1.8 million euros at the official launch event in Berlin (30 April).

Shine on the market with a hearing impairment

Mario Boy is hearing-impaired and has been working as a system merchandiser in the toom building block laboratory not far from the company headquarters in Cologne-Porz since 2019. He also wanted to get a taste of the market for a few days - as is customary for all toom centralisers. How did that work out? We spoke to him.

For the fourth time in a row, toom has received the "Best Retailer of the Year" award in the DIY store category. The award is based on a survey conducted by Globis Consulting GmbH, in which German and Austrian consumers submitted more than 140,000 ratings in 15 different categories.

Accessibility at toom

"Easy language makes you independent!"

Empowering as many people as possible to do it themselves: This is a central concern of toom. The three DIY brochures in plain language are helpful for this, and now a large section on toom.de has also been rewritten in easy-to-understand language. Dr Angelika Magiros from project partner Bundesvereinigung Lebenshilfe e.V. tells us how important these tools are for many people with and without intellectual disabilities, and what else is planned together with toom in terms of inclusion.

Winter care packages for the homeless

Since 2018, toom has been supporting the Little Home e.V. association in building mini-homes for homeless people. Especially now, when it is dark and dreary outside, the residents of the Little Homes are happy to receive little things that are decorative and useful, such as cushions, blankets or torches. toom is therefore donating 40 care packages to Little Home.

Reusable pallets

toom saves even more plastic

One and a half years ago, toom started with 60,000 Floritray pallets for transporting plants, and there are now a further 300,000 of these in all toom stores. With the expansion of the more sustainable reusable industry solution, up to 202 tonnes of plastic can be saved per year. toom managing director Dominique Rotondi takes stock and gives an outlook.

BUND pesticide test:

toom plants without pesticide residues that are harmful to bees

After 2021 and 2022, BUND has once again analysed bee-friendly plants in stores for pesticide residues. Of the seven garden centres and DIY stores examined, toom was the only one that did not detect any bee-harmful pesticides on plants advertised as bee-friendly. We spoke to Ribanna Jansen, Project Manager Sustainability at toom, about the "beneficial bee-friendly" range, the different needs of beneficial insects and quality control at toom.

Taking big steps towards more sustainable gardening

As the first German Baumarkt DIY store, toom has committed itself to reducing the use of synthetic chemical pesticides and enlisted the support of the independent environmental protection organisation GLOBAL 2000. In the first step of joint pesticide screening, 22 items were systematically replaced with more sustainable alternatives in 2022.

Fairtrade poinsettias, more sustainable flower arrangements and Fair Trees

This year, toom is once again offering fairtrade Nordmann fir trees as well as more sustainable Christmas decorations and Advent wreaths. The Fairtrade-certified poinsettias are getting an upgrade thanks to a joint pilot project with Fairtrade. New at toom: customers can use their smartphone to check whether the Christmas tree really fits before buying.

Toom is the first retailer in Germany to launch a pilot project with Fairtrade Germany for more cuttings with the Fairtrade seal. The aim: more fairly traded plants, lower production costs, higher premiums. In addition, toom pays an extra premium of one cent per Fairtrade plant purchased to the workers on the cutting farms.

Since 25 July, users of the car-sharing and van-sharing provider Miles have been able to park for 60 minutes free of charge in Toom car parks at 15 locations. The pilot project will initially run until the end of 2022.
