R2-D2 packs for the customers
by Jana Niemann und Sylvia Hannstein

Toom has recently fully automated the small parts warehouse at the Fulfillment Centre (FFC) in Rodgau. Seven robots pack orders on their own. How does this work, what are the benefits and what has changed for colleagues and customers?

At the beginning of March, toom successfully put its new AutoStore system into productive operation at the Fulfillment Centre (FFC) in Rodgau. The initial interim results are positive across the board:

"We are very satisfied. The commissioning of the AutoStore system went smoothly and without any problems. The go-live went according to plan and had no impact on day-to-day business," summarises Dominique Rotondi, Managing Director of Goods & Logistics at toom Baumarkt DIY store.

How does AutoStore work?

AutoStore will enable significantly more efficient processes in small parts picking in future:

  • Seven autonomously operating robots remove bins from the storage cube, transport them automatically and make them available to employees directly at the picking ports.
  • The advantage: this significantly reduces distances in the warehouse and creates ergonomic working conditions.

What can AutoStore already do at this stage?

Around 23,000 containers are already stored productively and are used daily in order processing. Automated provisioning has noticeably reduced throughput times. This ensures greater reliability and flexibility in day-to-day operations, especially with the increasing volume of orders.

„The go-live shows what is possible when expertise, team spirit and innovative strength come together. AutoStore is a real benefit for our logistics processes and a strong signal for the future of FFC in Rodgau.“
David Reinke, Project Manager and Head of Supply Chain Management at toom Baumarkt DIY store

The successful transition to live operation is the result of close collaboration between logistics, IT, technology and the head office at toom, as well as several external partners. Thanks to intensive training, comprehensive test runs and technical fine-tuning in the weeks leading up to the go-live, the system was launched without any interruptions or restrictions.

„The system has made our processes noticeably easier and ensures greater efficiency in day-to-day operations. It also gives us the scalability we need to meet future requirements.“
Daniel Czernik, Warehouse Manager toom E-commerce FFC Rodgau

The logistics site in Rodgau is deliberately located close to the toom warehouse in Dietzenbach so that both the product range and delivery times are optimised. "Thanks to the more efficient process organisation, we can not only expand the product range, but also improve the customer experience," says Reinke. B2C orders from the toom online shop are processed here on a total area of around 30,000 square metres.

„We deliberately opted for standardised AutoStore integration. And we got exactly what was crucial for us: stable processes from day one.“
