The parents' driving licence becomes a reality in the science fiction drama "The Assessment". In Luzia Schmid's documentary film "I want it all. Hildegard Knef", daughter Christina "Tinta" Gardiner confesses that her mother could sometimes become a stress test for the closest family. And a murder at the 13-year-old son's school puts an entire family under stress in "Adolescence".

First Berlinale selection

The extensively celebrated 75th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival has barely closed its doors when two of its highlights are already coming to cinemas here. Tom Tykwer's "The Light" will be pouring across the country's biggest screens from the end of March. While Mala Emde will be sprinting through "Köln 75" with plenty of local and contemporary colour from the middle of the month, on the hunt for the perfect grand piano. To balance things out, comedian Seth Rogen turns Hollywood on its head as a newly minted film boss in the Apple TV+ series "The Studio".

Poetry and anarchy

Poetry and anarchy combine in two of February's most beautiful films: while the Spanish drama "The Teacher Who Promised Us the Sea" tells the story of a poetic teacher in the resistance against Franco, the English drama "Bird" is all about the magic in the chaotic life of a twelve-year-old. The third season of the satire "The White Lotus" kicks off on Sky and Wow.

Real pop stars and true folk heroes

Anyone planning to enter the music business in 2025 can now pick up a few tips at the cinema. But be careful, these are feature films, not documentaries. In "Better Man", you can tell by the fact that the star of the film, Robbie Williams, is portrayed by a fantastically animated monkey. Motto: Stardom is a monkey business! Gaelic-Irish hip-hoppers Kneecap are working on their own myth. Department stores' extortionist Arno Funke, on the other hand, took a completely different route to fame in the early 90s.

Film is always a game with time. In "The Outrun", director Nora Fingscheidt assembles the story of her protagonist from memories. In "Here", legendary director Robert Zemeckis observes a single place over millions of years. The work of director Wim Wenders spans more than 50 years. He has picked out his ten favourite feature films for the "Best of Wim Wenders" DVD box set.

Documented history

Documentaries have long since ceased to be a marginal phenomenon in cinema. In "Dahomey", director Mati Diop captures the repatriation of stolen art to Benin in an unusual way and was honoured with the Golden Bear for her work. "Riefenstahl" by Andres Veiel may have screened out of competition in the Venice competition, but the filmic treatment of Leni Reifenstahl's estate made waves. If you feel like escapism after so much documented history, you can let yourself fall into the eight-part, guaranteed fictional reality of Batman's supervillain "The Penguin" on Sky/WOW.

Women on the edge of hell

Women in extreme situations are the focus of cinema in September. In "The Substance", Demi Moore undergoes a horrendous makeover. Meanwhile, Kate Winslet follows in the footsteps of "photographer" Lee Miller and documents the liberated concentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. And Arthaus-Verleih honours Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar on his 75th birthday with his ten best films in a DVD box set.

Old states rediscovered

"Two to One" resurrects the GDR and tells the true story of the East German mark in its final stages. In "The Dead Don't Hurt", actor and director Viggo Mortensen looks at the colonisation of North America through the eyes of a young migrant. The years 1985 to 2020 in West Germany can be watched on the ARD Plus streaming channel with 1758 episodes of "Lindenstraße".

Two taxis and love

In times of digitalisation, taxis have become almost the only place where people can actually look each other in the eye. In the New York Yellow Cab of "Daddio", a profound conversation about relationships develops between Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson. While in the Tehran of "A Small Piece of the Pie", a late love affair takes shape - with unexpected consequences. The seven episodes of the HBO satire series "The Sympathizer", on the other hand, take us on a trip to Vietnam in Hollywood style.

Atmospherically colourful

Rain is followed by sunshine - even in summer cinema. The rain falls like buckets in the British natural disaster drama "The End We Start From". In his directorial debut "Problemista", Julio Torres takes us on a journey into shrill, colourful magical realism. And for those who want to be drawn into the dangerously romantic atmosphere of a London tower block, the DVD of "All of Us Strangers" is highly recommended.

Berlinale Selection

Two of the most acclaimed films of the 74th Berlin Film Festival are coming to cinemas here this April. In "Andrea Gets a Divorce", Austrian cabaret artist Josef Hader puts Birgit Minichmayr in a moral quandary. Matthias Glasner's epic "Dying", for which he was honoured with the Silver Screenplay Bear, was also surprisingly cheerful.

In March, things get turbulent in the cinema and dark on the screen. Persian-American director Maryam Kesharvarz has spiced up her own biography to turn it into the quirky tragicomedy "The Persian Version". Nicolas Cage haunts the dreams of complete strangers. And director Robert Schwentke knits the seven-part thriller series "Helgoland 513" from real-life experiences during the Covid pandemic.

in 2012, historiography in Great Britain had to be corrected somewhat when Richard III's grave was found under a car park. Director Steven Frears turned it into the comedic drama "The Lost King". In "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry", Jim Broadbent wanders the British Isles as the title character. And Prime Video is once again unleashing heaven and hell with a new season of "Good Omens".

Tears of laughter in the cinema

Tragicomedy is when you can still laugh. This need for a smile behind the tears even seems to be global. In "Broker", Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda finds it in a young mother looking for a new family for babies. In "Red Sky", German filmmaker Christian Petzold follows the self-pity of a young author with one laughing and one crying eye. And Damien Chazelle brings the golden era of Hollywood to a close with a glittering film party on the "Babylon" DVD.

"Call Jane" takes a critical look at women's rights in the USA in the 1960s. In "She Said", German director Maria Schrader has turned the allegations of abuse against Harvey Weinstein into a gripping documentary thriller. And Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu takes the piss out of male vanity in "Bardo, the fictional chronicle of a handful of truths".

Sönke Wortmann's family satire "The Surname" provides a high volume of pointed dialogue. A documentary about the writer Elfriede Jelinek vividly describes what it means to "let language off the leash". And the new film adaptation of "Nothing New in the West" is available on Netflix.

No quiet hinterland

Time and again, cinema likes to take a look at the provincial hinterland, where emotions run high between tradition and modern technology. Like in Kosovo, for example, where in "Hive" a young widow dares to first get a driving licence and then even start her own business. In the flat Holstein countryside in "Mittagsstunde", a son discovers several family secrets while caring for his parents. And if all this is still too close for comfort, you can watch a DVD in search of a "snow leopard" in the breathtakingly beautiful Tibetan highlands.

Peach conspiracy in the cinema

Because their peaches are no longer making a profit, solar panels are placed in front of a Spanish fruit-growing family. In her Golden Bear-winning social drama "Alcarràs - The Last Harvest", director Carla Simón tells the story of how this affects the minds of three generations. Marc-Uwe and his hairy flatmate have to deal with confused climate change deniers in "The Kangaroo Conspiracy". Because there is no common thread to help them, author and co-director Marc-Uwe Kling uses all film genres. Meanwhile, Martin Freeman reaches the limits of his nerves as a beat cop in the British six-parter "The Responder".

50.000 FC fans celebrated the season opener of 1. FC Köln on the forecourt of the RheinEnergieStadion last Saturday. In addition to the large main stage, which was presented by REWE Group, the REWE, DER Travel and Tourism and ZooRoyal sales divisions enriched the family festival with numerous promotional stands.

Resistance in East and West

Andreas Dresen and Leander Haußmann are the two names that immediately spring to mind when it comes to film directors from the former GDR. In "Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W. Bush", Dresen focusses on the Bremen mother's fight to free her son from Guantanamo. Haußmann revives the East Berlin art scene. Those who need some serious exoticism afterwards are advised to watch the New Zealand gold-digger thriller "The Luminaries" in six parts.

Romance in black and white

Less colour, more content - that's the effect of black and white on the big screen. The American comedy "Come on Come on" and the French neo-romance "Where the Sun Rises in Paris" are two fine examples of this in German cinemas. By contrast, the Ukrainian political series "Servants of the People" is quite colourful and turbulent. Comedian and lead actor Volodymyr Selensky laid the foundations for his future presidency in 2015.

Films or series deviate from tried and tested stories with familiar clichés less often than you might think. If it does happen, you are most likely dealing with a masterpiece. You can find evidence of this in "Licorice Pizza" and "Petite Maman". The satirical series "The Good Place" turns nothing less than heaven and hell upside down in 13 episodes.
