War and friendship
by Edda Bauer

While the eponymous civil war rages in "Civil War", the dog in the animated film "Robot Dreams" makes himself a playmate out of tin. The eight episodes of the "Wednesday" series on DVD are wonderfully dark - our tips for May.

Civil War

Civil War ©DCM Pics ©A24 The USA is no longer united, the president is serving his third term and there are only two stars on the Star-Spangled Banner. It's "Civil War" and the title says it all in Alex Garland's new film. A four-man press team makes its way to the White House amidst chaos, terror and death, driven by the need for information and the desire for sensationalism. Garland spares neither large-scale spectacle nor profound thoughts on the nature of armed conflict. And last but not least, the whole thing is in competent acting hands with Dunst and Spaeny.

Alex Garland

His debut novel "The Beach" made Alex Garland, born in London in 1970, a star of the literary scene in 1996. This was surpassed when Danny Boyle turned the story into a film with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2000. Three further films were made in collaboration with Boyle, including "28 Days Later" (2002) and "28 Weeks Later" (2007), until Garland decided to direct the film himself. The two science fiction dramas "Ex Machina" (2014) and "Extinction" (2018) were followed by the psychological thriller "Men" (2022). And in his fourth film, "Civil War", Garland is also on the trail of the nature of man.

Robot Dreams

Robot Dreams ©Plaion Pictures It is two-dimensional, without stars, even without people and the dialogue lacks words, yet - or precisely because of this - "Robot Dreams" is one of the most beautiful films of the year. Spanish director Pablo Berger's film, based on the comic by American Sara Varon, is about nothing less than friendship. A lonely dog makes himself a robot friend and has a wonderful summer with him. However, the story only develops its true strength when, after a day at the beach, the salt water causes the hinges of the tin friend to rust.

Pablo Berger
Born in 1963 in Bilbao, Basque Country, Pablo Berger Uranga made his first short film at the age of 25 and won a scholarship for film at New York University. in 2003, he made his feature film debut with the comedy "Torremolinos 73". this was followed in 2012 by his dark Spanish version of Snow White, "Blancanieves", which won numerous international awards. After the black humour fantasy thriller "Abracadabra" (2017), the animated film "Robot Dreams" is his fourth feature film, which was awarded the European Film Award this year and was also nominated for an Oscar.
