Following a successful pilot phase in 2021, Toom is the first and only German Baumarkt DIY store to switch to environmentally friendly reusable pallets for plants.
From the producer via the Toom plant warehouse in Bottrop to the stores and back again - until now, plants have travelled this route in disposable pallets. This creates unnecessary plastic waste, which Toom will avoid in future. Following a successful pilot phase in 2021, Toom is the first and only German Baumarkt DIY store to switch to environmentally friendly reusable pallets and is the first retailer to introduce the Floritray reusable system. This is a closed-loop system for plant pallets. From April 2022, an initial 60,000 pallets will be used in 230 stores.
With the trays, Toom can not only save on plastic, but also improve its own carbon footprint: An independent study by the Fraunhofer Institute states that, in contrast to single-use systems, reusable systems can save 30 per cent CO2 after just ten uses. "The constant switch to reusable pallets brings us a big step closer to our goal of significantly reducing plastic waste in the garden sector too," says Theo Keysers, Purchasing Director Plant.
