Certification
"We don't have to promote diversity. Diversity is there."
by Bettina Rees

Elke Hömske, auditor of the job and family service, explains why REWE Group is now having diversity audited in addition to compatibility.

In addition to the long-established "job and family audit", REWE Group has now also decided to carry out the "job&diversity audit". This sends a clear signal: diversity is not only socially relevant, but also strategically important for our corporate culture.

"Diversity is there - it does not need to be promoted, but rather valued and managed," says Elke Hömske, who has been supporting REWE Group for many years as an auditor at berufundfamilie Service GmbH. In contrast to compatibility, which can be actively supported by the employer, diversity is a given reality. It is reflected in the different backgrounds, skills and life plans of employees.

The new audit helps to consciously shape how this diversity is dealt with and to integrate it into the HR strategy. "If an employer is open to recognising the diversity of its employees as both normal and valuable, it can take a strategic approach to dealing with diversity and promote a culture of cooperation," says Hömske.

This is not about more offers, but more penetration and visibility. REWE Group already has many measures in place - for example, to promote women in management, to support employees with special physical or mental abilities or limitations, or to strengthen generational diversity. These three topics are the focus of the new action programme.

"We work in three-year development cycles - it's not about faster, higher, further, but about culture," emphasises Hömske. The combination of both audits - compatibility and diversity - enables a holistic view of the needs of employees and strengthens the values that REWE Group stands for: openness, tolerance and equal opportunities.

With the new certification, audit job and family in combination with the audit job&diversity, which is a cooperation with the Diversity Charter, REWE Group emphasises that diversity is an integral part of the corporate culture. Elke Hömske is pleased: "REWE Group is thus sending a clear signal:diversity and equal opportunities are important, discrimination is not tolerated."

Good to know

What is the audit? The REWE Group, with companies such as REWE and PENNY, is the largest job and family-certified employer. The first REWE regions and the Cologne Central locations have now also been certified with the beruf&vielfalt audit, which focuses on recognising and promoting diversity in the workplace. The two-part audit supports employers in shaping and further developing a corporate culture that promotes compatibility, diversity and non-discrimination.

Why a joint audit for compatibility and diversity?because the two go hand in hand: those who are able to combine their private life with their career feel more comfortable - and those who feel that their personality is accepted can develop better.

Examples of work-life balance in practice: Whether caring for relatives, personal crises or mental health - REWE Group offers confidential counselling and concrete help, for example via the "awo lifebalance" service or the "Gemeinsam.topfit" health platform.

Examples of diversity in action: professional networks such as "DITO" for LGBTIQ employees or support programmes such as "Women's Drive" for women in management.

What the 2025 Compatibility Weeks were like

For the first time, REWE Group's work-life balance weeks took place over a three-week period this year: From 9 to 25 September, there were a total of 18 online events covering a wide variety of topics under the three themes of everyday help, family and care, and reconciliation.

The target group for the work-life balance weeks were employees at the REWE Group headquarters in Cologne, REWE Markt and PENNY Markt, each with regional offices, as well as REWE digital. With a total of 2960 participants, more employees than ever before took up the offer of the work-life balance weeks. The "Top 3 presentations" were "Flexible leisure time", "AI tools for everyday life" and "Financial planning". The feedback from participants was extremely positive, with 4.64 out of a total of 5 rating points.

Job and family audit + diversity
Engine for our organisation
Several areas of REWE Group were once again certified as a family- and life-phase-conscious employer with the job and family audit. With the new addition of "+ diversity", diversity issues are now also strategically anchored.
