Coinstar service at REWE
Small change for the food banks
by Thomas Bonrath

Customers can now donate coins or exchange them for vouchers in 1,150 REWE stores. The entire amount of the coins is donated to Tafel Deutschland e.V. without any deduction of fees.

If you want to get rid of small change and support Tafel Deutschland e.V. at the same time, you should use the Coinstar service at REWE. The three partners have recently initiated a corresponding co-operation. The coin exchange machine and the newly introduced donation function are easy to use. In addition, the entire amount of coins is donated to Tafel Deutschland e.V. without any deduction of fees. The printed donation receipt can be converted into a recognised donation receipt via the Tafel website and is therefore also tax-deductible.

Simple exchange and donation concept

Coinstar vending machines can now be found in around 1,150 REWE stores nationwide and are usually located in the entrance area. Before inserting the coins, customers can choose between printing a voucher to be used in the supermarket or - more recently - donating the entire amount of coins to Tafel Deutschland e.V.. The small change can then simply be poured in unsorted and in large quantities. If the donation function is selected, a donation receipt is issued after the counting process. The text at the bottom of the donation receipt indicates that a donation receipt valid for the tax office can be obtained via the Tafel website for donations of 15 euros or more. Customers can also collect the donation vouchers to reach the minimum value.

If you decide in favour of the voucher, you can use it like a deposit voucher at the REWE checkout for payment. A maximum of 500 euros can be exchanged in this way. Coinstar charges a fee of 9.9 per cent on the amount exchanged and a flat transaction fee of 0.25 euros, which is deducted directly from the voucher. Counterfeit coins and foreign currencies are sorted out very carefully. A service that is well received: more than 8,000 customers use the Coinstar machines in REWE stores every day.

REWE and Coinstar:
Successful cooperation since 2019

coinstar put the first vending machine into operation in a REWE store in 2019. Due to its great popularity with customers, many more vending machines have been added since then. This makes REWE Coinstar's largest cooperation partner in Germany. The company operates over 25,000 active vending machines worldwide and is the market leader in the coin changer sector.

REWE has been cooperating with food banks for much longer - since 1996 - and regularly gives away food that is still good but can no longer be sold. Since 2011, REWE has also been organising the bag campaign in cooperation with Tafel Deutschland. The food banks pass on the rescued and donated food to people living in poverty.
