Solidarity that gets through
330.000 donation bags for the food banks
by Kirsten Hensen

REWE and nahkauf's "Gemeinsam Teller füllen" (Filling plates together) campaign shows how much can be achieved when many people get involved: As part of the two-week "Gemeinsam Teller füllen" campaign, around 330,000 bags of non-perishable food were donated and handed over to local food banks. REWE topped up the customers' donations with an additional 200,000 euros worth of food.

From 8 to 20 September, customers were able to purchase pre-packed bags of non-perishable food or a donation card worth 5 euros each in over 4,200 stores. It was also possible to participate by placing an order in the REWE online shop. At the end of the campaign, the amounts collected were converted into corresponding quantities of food and made available to the food banks. The bag contains long-life foodstuffs that are particularly scarce and urgently needed by the food banks, including potato dumplings, pesto, fusilli and tinned tomatoes.

Donations arrive where they are needed

Andreas Steppuhn, Chairman of Tafel Deutschland e. V., emphasises how important this support currently is for the more than 970 food banks in Germany: "The food banks don't normally receive donations of long-life food, so the campaign is an important form of support. Around 1.5 million people regularly visit the food banks, and in many places the demand is significantly higher. We would like to thank REWE and its customers for their solidarity."

REWE adds 200,000 euros to customer donations

REWE is providing the food banks with additional goods worth 200,000 euros as part of the campaign. The company is thus emphasising its ongoing support for the food banks and the common goal of reliably helping people in difficult situations.

"The fact that so many people are participating in the campaign even in economically difficult times is a strong sign of solidarity and humanity," says REWE Group Management Board member Peter Maly. "The food banks are facing major challenges. For us, it is a matter of course to stand by our long-standing partner and take responsibility together."

Long-standing partnership with impact

The food banks have been around for a good 30 years - and REWE has been one of their earliest and biggest supporters ever since. in 2010, REWE initiated an additional donation campaign for the food banks for the first time. The commitment, which has continued every year since then, supplements the permanent donation of food by stores and warehouses that can no longer be sold but can be consumed safely.
