Cinema at summer camp

No place in the world is better at shielding young people from their parents’ influence than a holiday camp. No wonder, then, that it has given rise to a whole host of myths and legends, true and fictional stories, a whole host of films – and even its own film sub-genres, ranging from the creepy to the romantic. Two decidedly original takes on the theme are hitting the big screen this summer. In the darkly colourful comedy *Sunny Dancer*, 18-year-old Ivy makes up for lost youth at a ‘chemo camp’. “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”, featuring a star-studded cast, develops into a satirical horror film-within-a-film. And on Netflix, comedian Ricky Gervais roams through animated alleyways in six episodes as a fat tomcat with his “Alley Cats”.

Classics with a new twist

The crux of film music is that, at best, you don’t even notice it. Two wonderful films showing in cinemas this July make it a central element of the plot. First, there is the romantic thriller-comedy *The Piano Tuner*, which centres on a piano concerto composed especially for the film. Then there’s Pedro Almodóvar’s regular composer, Alberto Iglesias, who weaves his harmonies around a classic by the Mexican singer Chavela, turning *A Bitter Feast* into an aural delight. Orchestrated drama also awaits viewers in the 10-part remake of the psychological thriller “Cape of Fear”, starring Amy Adams and Javier Bardem, on Apple TV.

Surreal from the Far East

Dreams and displaced reality - sometimes brightly coloured, sometimes eerily dark - as a connection between the Far East and France is not often found in cinema. All the more reason for viewers to take the opportunity in May to indulge in two exceptionally beautiful examples of this mixture. On the one hand, there is the French animated film "Little Amélie or the Character of Rain", which tells the story of a Belgian toddler in Japan and reflects on it at the same time. On the other hand, Chinese author and director Bi Gan offers his audience an immersive dream world with "Resurrection", which was honoured at the Cannes Film Festival. And the Franco-German broadcaster arte brings viewers back down to earth with the six-part drama series "Etty".

New standard in hydroponic cultivation

REWE Group is bringing lettuce mixes from hydroponic cultivation to its stores for the first time. The lettuces are grown all year round in special water basins and can therefore be produced in a particularly resource-efficient way. The result is lettuce that impresses with its quality and freshness. REWE is launching the new "Crispy Mix" salad mix in all stores in Bavaria - other varieties and regions will follow. PENNY will also start the nationwide launch at the beginning of April.

Two from one

This side of the silent film era, there aren't many directors who could claim that two of their films were released in the same year. Let alone in the same month. US director Richard Linklater likes to juggle several film projects at the same time, which is why his chamber drama "Blue Moon" with Ethan Hawke was shown in competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 2025 and his homage to French filmmaking "Nouvelle Vague" in competition at the Cannes Film Festival shortly afterwards. In reverse order, both films are now brightening up German cinema in March. Rapper Fatoni, aka pizza chef Toni, experiences the shrillness of the German provinces in the nine episodes of the series "Kacken an der Havel" on Netflix.

Existentially fast-paced

They run, pedal, play and talk their way through life. In "Souleyman's Story" and "Marty Supreme", everything is at stake. While one of them races through the streets of Paris on his bike, the other plays his way to the top of the world in ping-pong. Both films are loosely based on true events. But despite their similarities in the story, "Souleyman's Story" and "Marty Supreme" could not be more different in their respective virtuoso styles. Only the magnificent Trine Dyrholm, for whom the six parts of "The Danish Woman" were literally written to the body, can keep up with them in terms of series - to be seen on Arte.

The exception to this rule are two female directors whose emotional and effortlessly instructive films are helping to get the 2026 cinema year off to an extraordinary start. Firstly, there is Ildikó Enyedi, who makes an ancient ginkgo tree the centre of attention in "Silent Friend". Secondly, Chloé Zhao has taken a closer look at the life of the Shakespeare family in "Hamnet". In "The Deepest Blue", 77-year-old Tereza dives into the Brazilian Amazon region.
