Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe and looks back on a history spanning thousands of years. What’s particularly remarkable is that, despite numerous historical changes, shifting forms of government, and shifting borders, the country has never changed its name to this day.
At the same time, many traditions remain firmly rooted in people’s daily lives to this day. Anyone visiting Bulgaria will quickly encounter some unique customs: for example, a nod traditionally means ’no’, while a shake of the head can mean ’yes’. Centuries-old customs are also still observed in many places. Among the best known are the Kukeri, who, with their impressive masks, elaborately designed costumes, and loud bells, are said to symbolically drive away evil spirits and bring good luck for the new year.
