Anyone visiting Slovakia will encounter a culture in which politeness, mutual respect and living traditions are firmly rooted in everyday life. Our local BILLA colleagues offer insights into these cultural customs and highlight what matters most in day-to-day interactions.
Slovak manners are particularly evident in face-to-face interactions: people are regarded as warm, friendly and good-humoured, yet at the same time down-to-earth and characterised by a strong work ethic. Hospitality is actively practised here – often through small gestures, but above all during shared meals, which play a central role as a unifying element.
In many families, for instance, it is a tradition to gather for a meal together on Sundays – a firmly established moment of togetherness. Rituals such as raising a glass together also follow clear rules and symbolise mutual appreciation and closeness. Many of these customs are deeply rooted in everyday life and are consciously upheld – not least because, during the cold Slovak winters, being together and socialising provides a particular sense of warmth.
