“The way to our heart is through our stomach.” – This Romanian proverb perfectly captures the importance of food and culinary traditions in everyday life. Today, we’re introducing three hearty dishes that are essential to Romanian cuisine.
Mici: Romania’s Grill Favorite
Mici – also known as Mititei – are grilled meat rolls that enjoy great popularity across the country. Whether in restaurants, at markets, or during family gatherings, Mici are always part of the menu. Their distinctive flavor comes from a blend of beef, pork, or lamb, combined with garlic and spices.
Sarmale: The Heart of Romanian Cuisine
Sarmale, cabbage rolls filled with minced meat and rice, are among Romania’s most symbolic dishes. They stand for patience, togetherness, and traditional craftsmanship. Preparing Sarmale usually takes nearly an entire day, which is why they are traditionally never served on the same day they are made.
Bulz: A Dish as Diverse as Romania Itself
Bulz is a rustic cornmeal dish that varies from region to region: sometimes grilled, sometimes baked, and often filled with sheep’s cheese or meat. The version featured here – with melted cheese inside – is particularly popular.
How these dishes are prepared is explained by our PENNY colleagues in the video – enjoy discovering Romania’s culinary treasures!
