This side of the silent film era, there are not many directors who could claim that two of their films were released in the same year. Let alone in the same month. US director Richard Linklater likes to juggle several film projects at the same time, which is why his chamber drama "Blue Moon" with Ethan Hawke was shown in competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 2025 and his homage to French filmmaking "Nouvelle Vague" in competition at the Cannes Film Festival shortly afterwards. In reverse order, both films are now brightening up German cinema in March. Rapper Fatoni, aka pizza chef Toni, experiences the shrillness of the German provinces in the nine episodes of the series "Kacken an der Havel" on Netflix.

"The best way to criticise a film is to make one yourself." in 1960, Jean-Luc Godard was still writing reviews, but he already had the screenplay for his feature film debut in the drawer. His editorial colleagues Claude Chabrol ("The Disappointed", 1958) and François Truffaut ("They Kissed and They Slapped", 1959) had already made themselves comfortable in the director's chair. Now it's his turn. "Nouvelle Vague" is Richard Linklater's stylish homage to the megalomania and vision with which Godard directed the legendary gangster romance "Out of Breath" within 18 days.
Richard Linklater
born in Houston, Texas in 1960, Richard Linklater is regarded as the wonder bag among current directors. He is at home in every genre (comedy "A Killer Romance", tragedy "Last Flag Flying") and in every form (animation "A Scanner Darkly", TV series "God Save Texas", documentary "Fast Food Nation"). He has a penchant for long-term studies ("Before" trilogy from 1995-2013, 12 years of filming for "Boyhood") and Ethan Hawke. There is no room for the latter in "Nouvelle Vague" due to his lack of knowledge of French. As a consolation, Linklater cast him in the lead role in "Blue Moon".

On the evening of 31 March 1943, lyricist Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) knows that his career is over. He has secretly stolen out of the premiere of the musical "Oklahoma!" - the proof, cast in sheet music, that his composing partner Richard Rodgers has been creatively cheating with librettist Oscar Hammerstein. Successfully to boot! Now Hart stands at the bar of Sardi's and complains to the barman - with a little "You leave me standing alone" from his song "Blue Moon" in his heart and his legendary bourbon-soaked cynicism on his tongue.
Ethan Hawke
Like Linklater, actor Ethan Hawke is also a Texan, albeit born in Austin in 1970. When they first worked together, "Before Sunrise" in 1995, they had no idea that this brief romance between him and Julie Delpy would become a long-term study, with sequels in 2005 ("Before Sunset") and 2013 ("Before Midnight"). You can also watch Hawke grow older in real time during the 12-year shoot of "Boyhood" (2014). In "Blue Moon", Linklater now gets another highly award-worthy performance out of Ethan Hawke.

Not that pizza chef isn't an honourable profession. But that's not why Toni emigrated to Berlin 18 years ago - from the tranquil town of Kacken an der Havel. Now he returns, not as a celebrated rapper, but as the newly orphaned son of a place that has changed dramatically in his absence. Dimitrij Schaad ("The Kangaroo Chronicles") and his brother Alex (director of 2022's "Out of My Skin") are responsible for this shrill ode to the supposedly desolate province. For the lead role, they were able to recruit Fatoni (real name Anton Schnieder), a genuine rapper, and for many other roles, serious actors with an impeccable CV to date.

A flat in an old building in Berlin is not only expensive, but usually also comes with its own history lesson. And it's even free. Anyone who has ever renovated one of these flats and come across traces of the past knows this.
For all those who don't have the opportunity to do this live, the games company btf in Cologne-Ehrenfeld has developed "The Berlin Apartment", a digital treasure hunt that ranges from nostalgic to anarchic and occasionally takes a look through the window over the wall.
