There is a cinema, away from the mainstream, in which situations are more important than stories, images more significant than words and nuances more profound than dialogue. Two films this autumn prove how well this works as satire. In "Bugonia", Yorgos Lanthimos places the fate of humanity in the hands of a conspiracy theorist. Ari Aster centres the often absurd drama of the Covid pandemic on the small town of Eddington in New Mexico. The new eight-part miniseries "The Beast in Me" with Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys on Netflix is far more darkly mysterious.

In the big screen stories, autumn is human. For example in Kelly Reichardt's crook comedy "The Mastermind", in which a young father plans an art heist in the autumnal US province. Bookseller Agathe is secretly waiting for someone to steal her heart in the romantic comedy "Jane Austen and the Chaos in My Life". Meanwhile, the crime-thriller series "The Savant" with Jessica Chastain on apple tv+ generates suspense.

As a haven of security, the family in film has long been increasingly in doubt. Two highly original examples of this herald the start of this year's cinema autumn. "Looking into the Sun" observes four generations of a family in the Altmark region. In the crime comedy "Wenn der Herbst naht", surprising elective affinities arise. And the iconic US series "Girl" Lena Dunham also finds a British family connection in the 10 episodes of "Too Much".

Film is always a game with time. In "The Outrun", director Nora Fingscheidt assembles the story of her protagonist from memories. In "Here", legendary director Robert Zemeckis observes a single place over millions of years. The work of director Wim Wenders spans more than 50 years. He has picked out his ten favourite feature films for the "Best of Wim Wenders" DVD box set.

Nowadays, film stories can no longer do without women in leading roles. Even in the Vatican, they are modestly at the centre, as "Conclave" proves. In Jacques Audiard's transgender gangster musical "Emilia Pérez", a feared drug baron fulfils his dream of living in a woman's body. And Saoirse Ronan rushes through London in a hail of bombs as a courageous mother in "Blitz".

Documentaries have long since ceased to be a marginal phenomenon in cinema. In "Dahomey", director Mati Diop captures the repatriation of stolen art to Benin in an unusual way and was honoured with the Golden Bear for her work. "Riefenstahl" by Andres Veiel may have screened out of competition in the Venice competition, but the filmic treatment of Leni Reifenstahl's estate made waves. If you feel like escapism after so much documented history, you can let yourself fall into the eight-part, guaranteed fictional reality of Batman's supervillain "The Penguin" on Sky/WOW.

Women in extreme situations are the focus of cinema in September. In "The Substance", Demi Moore undergoes a horrendous makeover. Meanwhile, Kate Winslet follows in the footsteps of "photographer" Lee Miller and documents the liberated concentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. And Arthaus-Verleih honours Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar on his 75th birthday with his ten best films in a DVD box set.

"Two to One" resurrects the GDR and tells the true story of the East German mark in its final stages. In "The Dead Don't Hurt", actor and director Viggo Mortensen looks at the colonisation of North America through the eyes of a young migrant. The years 1985 to 2020 in West Germany can be watched on the ARD Plus streaming channel with 1758 episodes of "Lindenstraße".

In times of digitalisation, taxis have become almost the only place where people can actually look each other in the eye. In the New York Yellow Cab of "Daddio", a profound conversation about relationships develops between Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson. While in the Tehran of "A Small Piece of the Pie", a late love affair takes shape - with unexpected consequences. The seven episodes of the HBO satire series "The Sympathizer", on the other hand, take us on a trip to Vietnam in Hollywood style.
