Existentially fast-paced
by Edda Bauer

They run, pedal, play and talk their way through life. In "Souleyman's Story" and "Marty Supreme", everything is at stake. While one of them races through the streets of Paris on his bike, the other plays his way to the top of the world in ping-pong. Both films are loosely based on true events. But despite their similarities in the story, "Souleyman's Story" and "Marty Supreme" could not be more different in their respective virtuoso styles. Only the magnificent Trine Dyrholm, for whom the six parts of "The Danish Woman" were literally written to the body, can keep up with them in terms of series - to be seen on Arte.

Souleyman's story

© Film Cinema Text You meet them dozens of times a day in European cities, but you only see them for a few minutes when they ring the doorbell to deliver something. French director Boris Lojkine took a closer look at the bicycle couriers in Paris. The result is the feature film "Souleyman's Story", which follows its Guinean protagonist closely as he delivers food, memorises an expensive story for his application for political asylum and uses the telephone to find a foster home for his sick mother back home.

The 23-year-old Guinean Abou Sangaré takes Cannes by storm when "Souleyman's Story" is shown in the Un certain regard section in 2024. He won the award for best actor, as well as the César for best new male discovery. Despite the awards, Sangaré - who padded out his fictional role with his own biography - has no plans to pursue an acting career. Instead, the car mechanic, who trained in Guinea, wants to open his own garage in Amien, France. His fame in Cannes earned him a temporary residence permit in 2025.

Marty Supreme

© Tobis Film Marty Mauser is more than just a shoe salesman. Not only he knows that, but everyone who has ever seen him at the table tennis table. When the 1952 World Championships come round in Tokyo, Marty wants to prove it to the whole world. Provided he can find a sponsor. "Marty Supreme" is already being talked about as the big winner of the 2026 film trophies. And legally so. Timothy Chalamet has trained himself to semi-professional level, Gwyneth Paltrow has returned from her screen retirement and director Josh Safdie is single-handedly escalating the screen for the first time.

Josh Safdie
Josh Safdie, born in 1984, and his brother Benny, who is two years younger, grew up in New York City and founded their first film collective while studying in Boston. After around a dozen short films, the directing duo became famous with the fast-paced gangster comedy "Good Time" in 2017 and world-famous in 2019 with the even faster-paced jewel heist - directed by Adam Sandler - in "The Black Diamond". 2025 Benny Safdie won the directing prize in Venice for his solo film "The Smashing Machine". At the upcoming Oscars, the brothers are likely to snatch the prizes from each other.

The Danish Woman

slot Machine To her Icelandic neighbours, she comes across as a recently retired eco-aunt from Denmark - a little eccentric, but basically okay. But Ditte Jensen has a dark secret: not only was she stationed in all the world's hotspots as a UN blue helmet, she also brought with her a resolute way of solving problems. She is happy to put this at the service of her neighbours, albeit without being asked.

Ditte Jensen is a parade role for Trine Dyrholm, who has made a name for herself as a force of nature in films such as "In a Better World" and "Queen". In "The Danisch Woman", she gets to live this out to the full.

Game
Sword of the Sea

© Giant Squid The title "Sword of the Sea" is misleading, as the sea is largely made of sand and the sword is only used to surf through this sand. But the misleading is part of the concept of the gigantic leviathans that have to be fought in this surreal game world. Skill is more important than violence and the journey is more exciting than the destination. Without a deep story, explanation or dialogue, the adventure is told through shapes, colours and music. A large screen and good speakers are almost obligatory.
