Stefan Magel (59) is ending his professional career at REWE Group and will leave the company as Divisional Director/COO Penny Germany on 30 September 2022 at his own request and on the best of terms. His successor will be Dr Stefan Görgens, who was previously Managing Director Sales Department for PENNY Germany.
Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group, said: "Stefan Magel has done an outstanding job over the past 13 years. He first demonstrated his qualities as a hands-on and innovative manager as Chairman of the Management Board of toom Baumarkt DIY store. Since 2011, as a member of the management of PENNY Germany and since 2016 as Divisional Director/COO PENNY, he has been largely responsible for the successful turnaround and the continued positive economic development of our discount stores. Stefan Magel had already signalled at the time of his last contract extension that he would like to retire after this contract and thus thankfully gave us sufficient lead time to prepare the succession plan. I would like to thank Stefan Magel most sincerely for his great commitment and outstanding achievements for REWE Group and wish him all the best for his private future."
Stefan Magel said: "My sincere thanks go to the Management Board of REWE Group and all my colleagues who have accompanied and actively supported me in the challenging tasks of the turnarounds at toom Baumarkt DIY store and PENNY Germany. Together, we have laid the foundations for lasting and sustainable economic success. These were exhausting and at the same time great years of cooperation. I am now looking forward to contributing my expertise and experience in the future, particularly in private social engagement in the area of association work and NGOs."
Dr Stefan Görgens will be the new COO of PENNY Germany from 1 October 2022. Görgens began his career at REWE Group in November 2017 after ten years of professional experience at McKinsey & Company, most recently as an Associate Partner in the consulting firm's Retail Practice. At REWE Group, he was initially Head of Strategy & Consulting and thus responsible for strategy development and implementation for the REWE and PENNY business units as well as for the implementation of strategic and operational projects within the Group. From November 2018 to February 2021, Dr Görgens was responsible for the PENNY Region West as Regional Manager. Since March 2021, he has been Managing Director Sales Department PENNY Germany, reporting to Stefan Magel.
Lionel Souque said: "I am very pleased that we have once again been able to recruit a manager from our own ranks for the position of COO PENNY Germany, thus ensuring a smooth transition and continuity."
Dr Stefan Görgens explained: "I am very much looking forward to the new responsibility and the continued cooperation with my colleagues for the future successful development of PENNY. I would like to sincerely thank the Management Board of REWE Group for the trust they have placed in me."
