Daphne Eckert, REWE wine purchasing assistant, spent four weeks in August 2021 working in the national sales department as part of the internal Jobswop programme. She spoke to one about her experiences.
Daphne Eckert
one: Mrs Eckert, how did your job shadowing programme come about?
Daphne Eckert : I told my line manager, Antonio Ribeiro, that I wanted to develop further within the REWE Group. This also includes gaining an insight into other departments. Shortly after our conversation, Mr Ribeiro came across REWE Group's Jobswop offer and approached me about it. I immediately thought it was a great idea.
one: How easy or difficult was the preparation?
Daphne Eckert: It was very straightforward because I had the full support of my line manager beforehand. We found an area, the two senior managers spoke to each other on the phone and then I informed the HR department. I didn't have to convince anyone about the jobswop, everyone was open to the idea.
one: How much extra work does a jobswop mean?
Daphne Eckert: It does mean more. But I never felt that way. If necessary, I took care of my actual work in the evenings or in between. But that was completely fine
one: How did your own colleagues react?
Daphne Eckert: When I told them in advance what I was planning to do, everyone reacted positively and wished me lots of fun and success. I had the support of my department the whole time.
one: Did the jobswop period have a positive impact on your department?
Daphne Eckert: Yes, because we can work more efficiently in many areas thanks to the networking with the sales department. That was the original idea behind the idea that the purchasing and sales departments should network more closely with each other in order to create synergies. And that's exactly what happened. For example, we revised some processes and made them more efficient. Or colleagues asked me who I could give them as a contact person in the sales department to address a concern quickly and easily. In the end, I think we all benefited, not just me. I think that's really nice.
And the fact that the time has had such a positive effect is of course mainly due to the departments that welcomed me.
one: How were you received?
Daphne Eckert : My jobwop was super organised. Everyone knew in advance when I was coming to the respective department. Everyone took the time to explain their tasks to me. That was very effective, I got a lot of insight into all four areas of the sales department. I was taken everywhere, partly via teams and partly in person because of coronavirus. The organisation was perfect, which is why my jobswop went so well.
one: What criteria did you use to select the area that welcomed you?
Daphne Eckert : There were several criteria. Firstly, it was important for me to go into an area that was not directly but indirectly related to my area. At the same time, the department had to introduce me to something new from the diverse world of REWE. That all fitted in with the sales department.

The close proximity to the market that I experienced during my job hop in the sales department was worth its weight in gold for me. It has helped me to make lasting progress. In particular, I have a much better understanding of market processes. This has helped me to look at things differently in my day-to-day work and to view the markets differently. To be able to make the right decisions at head office, it is important to understand how the market works. In short, my criteria were a mix of interest, work-related points of contact and the desire to look beyond the boundaries of my job.
one: What tips do you have for potential job applicants?
Daphne Eckert: Have the courage to express your jobswop wish, to say that you really want to know what is happening to the right and left of your field of work. The effort is certainly high. But the added value is so much greater than this effort. And I can definitely see that. I can only recommend it to anyone and everyone!
And another tip, or rather a wish, for the HR department responsible: I would like to see feedback to the host department after the work shadowing programme as an integral part of the jobswop process.
After completing her Bachelor's degree in International Wine Business in 2018, Daphne Eckert joined the REWE purchasing department as an assistant for the wine, sparkling wine and spirits product group. At the same time, she is currently completing a dual study programme in International Retail Management at Reutlingen University. In August 2021, she spent four weeks in the national full-range sales department as part of a job hop.
