Award for Sonja Jansen
"The most important thing is to start early"
by Judith Morgenschweis

Sonja Jansen is one of the best graduates of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in North Rhine-Westphalia. Our wholesale and foreign trade management trainee scored 98 out of a possible 100 points in her final examination - a top performance that impressed our board member Daniela Büchel.

Sonja Jansen For the third time in a row, Sonja Jansen, a REWE Group trainee, was among the top graduates of the North Rhine-Westphalian Chamber of Industry and Commerce this year. Daniela Büchel took the time to congratulate her and enquire about the young employee's plans: "98 points is a fantastic achievement. How do you achieve that? And more importantly, what's next for you?"

The graduate's plans are very clear, as she is currently studying retail management alongside her apprenticeship: "Next, I'm going to Costa Rica for a semester abroad. In September, I will then complete my studies at CBS with a Bachelor of Arts."

By the way: Sonja's learning tactics sound very simple: "The most important thing is to start early. I started studying four months before the exam and then learnt continuously every day in small chunks." She was helped by an app in which she could save her learning goals and study using digital flashcards.

Craft skills championship
A total of four young service staff impressed with excellent performances in their journeyman's exams and some of them made it through to the German Craft Skills Championships 2023. Butchery sales assistants Jennifer Löffler from the REWE Centre in Bad Münstereifel and Lucy de Pasquale from the REWE in Cologne-Bickendorf completed an outstanding journeyman's examination in summer 2023, qualifying them for the chamber competition. There they secured the first two places by just one point and were allowed to take part in the North Rhine-Westphalia state competition. Lucy de Pasquale came second here.

Raul Pacuaraiu from the REWE Centre in Bernkastel-Kues and Pascal Jung from the Westerwald REWE store in Hachenburg - two trainees in the butchery trade - also excelled in their final exams and were named the best in their guild. They were able to impress in the subsequent chamber competition and thus received an invitation to the Rhineland-Palatinate state competition. With great skill and ability, they also won over the jury of this state competition. Pacuaraiu took second place, while Jung was even delighted to win. This means that Pascal Jung is now set to take part in the German Championships. "We are incredibly proud of these great achievements by our trainees. This not only shows that we have extremely talented young people in our ranks, but also that we offer a high quality of training and support," praises Günther Götz, Head of the HR Competence Centre.
