Rising inflation and cost of living
REWE Group doubles shopping discount for employees

From 1 July 2022, REWE Group will double the employee discount at REWE and PENNY for all REWE Group employees from five to ten per cent. The reasons for this are current economic and social developments.

"In light of the current price developments in almost all areas of life, we want to support our employees quickly and effectively in their everyday lives. We have therefore decided to double the employee discount on purchases at REWE and PENNY for all REWE Group employees in Germany, as this will provide direct and noticeable financial relief in everyday life," says Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group.

"The General Works Council expressly welcomes the doubling of the employee discount in view of the ever-increasing inflation rate. The increase is a great and helpful support for our colleagues and their families in earning a living", explains Helmut Göttmann, Chairman of the REWE/PENNY General Works Council.

The discount increase is valid for the period from 1 July to 31 December 2022 and applies to purchases at REWE and PENNY up to a maximum of 1,000 euros per month. If tax allowances or exemption limits are exceeded as a result of the increased discount, the company will cover these costs so that employees benefit from the full discount.

The other general conditions for participating in the REWE Group employee discount remain unchanged and can be viewed in the Infonet.

Interview with Lionel Souque
"Support in difficult times"

The REWE Group has doubled the discount on food purchases for its employees. one spoke to Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group, about economic challenges and financial relief.

Lionel Souque one: Mr Souque, REWE Group has been offering its employees discounts on numerous products for many years. Why is that?
Lionel Souque:
Our employees - whether in the stores, travel agencies or administration and logistics centres - are the basis of our success. The products of our business units are their daily bread. It is therefore a matter of course, in my view, to grant them a discount on these products for their own use.

one: Now the discount on purchases at REWE and PENNY has been increased from five to ten per cent. How did this decision come about?
Lionel Souque:
It's in the news every day: As a result of the crises - from corona to problems with supply chains to the war in Ukraine - we currently have a huge inflation rate. That's why we as the Management Board, together with the retailers and works councils, decided very quickly and easily that we wanted to ease the financial burden on our employees and have doubled the discount to ten per cent until 31 December 2022. It is a form of support in difficult times that is intended to help people make a good living.

echo: Which purchases exactly are eligible for the increased discount?
Lionel Souque:
On all food purchases at REWE and PENNY. It helps our colleagues, who work hard every day for REWE Group, to compensate for the inflation rate, at least for everyday products.

I think this is a great gesture by the REWE Group towards its employees, but I would like to point out that who can afford to go bulk shopping/weekend shopping in the stores? There are many who cannot.

Employees who have retired can continue to use their employee card for a certain period of time. And also benefit from the discount. As far as I know.......

That's great, thank you, especially as a trainee you're really happy about the few extra euros you can now save :)

A great gesture by the Group. It's a shame that not all co-operatives are following suit, as you can read here.

it's a pity that Rewe Group is not the same as Rewe Group! Unfortunately, FürSie employees do not receive this benefit. :-(

Unfortunately, REWE Group employees who come from the Dortmund region and only have ReDo stores at their location do not benefit from this advantage either. What a pity

i am very happy about this and thank you, I don't think it is a matter of course, but a generous gesture, the margins in food retail are rather low compared to textile shops, for example, even if it is limited in time, I am happy about it and it should be recognised and not negated

Hello, the increase in the discount applies to all (subsidiary) companies in Germany that issue employee cards. So also for e.g. toom Baumarkt DIY store, Lekkerland, DER,...

Best regards!
