Rescue lane at the checkout II
A good idea prevails
by Achim Bachhausen

Rarely has the response to a one_contribution been so clearly positive as to our report on the "rescue lane at the checkout" in Ulrich Budnik's REWE supermarket in Dortmund. What unfortunately went unnoticed was that as great as the idea is, it wasn't entirely new. A fast lane for paramedics and emergency doctors has been in place at the REWE store in Somborn, Hesse, since the end of October last year.

"In our store, we have often had to witness emergency services spending their limited time in the checkout queue. When the alarm goes off, the rescuers have to rush out of the store empty-handed and with a growling stomach," says store manager Jürgen Herröder, describing his experience.

The solution was obvious to him: in the "rescue lane at the checkout", emergency services have priority and are paid immediately. And it's not just the emergency services that like this campaign. Customers are also enthusiastic. Conclusion: The "emergency lane at the checkout" is a sensible measure that achieves a great effect with comparatively little effort.
