The food banks in Germany are helping more and more people, while at the same time food donations are declining. REWE is therefore donating REWE gift cards worth half a million euros to the dedicated helpers.
Food banks are currently facing the challenge that more people are requesting their support while there is significantly less food available.
There are many reasons for this. Some food banks are supporting refugees from war zones with food and emergency parcels. In addition, more and more people are turning to the food banks because they can no longer afford the cost of living, which has risen due to inflation. And last but not least, many food banks have been receiving fewer donations for several months now. This is why the Chairman of Tafel Deutschland, Jochen Brühl, called for collection campaigns to be organised for the food banks back in mid-March.
REWE is now rushing to the aid of the food banks with a donation of 500,000 euros in the form of gift cards. REWE COO Peter Maly: "In times of need, society must stand together and act in solidarity. REWE has been supporting food banks throughout Germany since 1996, so we are very pleased to be able to support the food banks quickly and unbureaucratically with this campaign and our donation so that the many local helpers can continue to help socially and economically disadvantaged people."
This is a valuable help for the food banks in view of the continuing rise in inflation, which is causing problems for many households. Jochen Brühl: "The food banks are currently under more pressure than ever before. The war in Ukraine and the sharp rise in energy and food costs have led to an increase in the number of people visiting food banks in recent weeks. We assume that demand will continue to rise. The food banks urgently need support to be able to continue offering help to people affected by poverty. We are very pleased about the generous donation from REWE. The gift cards provide quick help for people who are currently unable to afford fresh food."
