FMS Handels GmbH, the operator of the nahkauf store in Elsterwerda, came up trumps twice over: For World Children's Day, the market square in front of the shop was transformed into a playground. The proceeds went to the "Sonneninsel" children's and youth centre in Pirna, explained managing director Stefan Köckeritz. His team had already mastered the test run a few days earlier with the first event. The enterprising men and women had used the children's sports festival "Elsterwerda gets moving" to support the local children with energy-giving nahkauf food bags and 5-euro shopping vouchers. Sports clubs, the fire brigade and the police (bike course) took part, presenting their activities, equipment and materials and inviting children to join in and try them out.

Good atmosphere, good food: With a family and children's party, René Irrgang and his team underpinned their self-chosen claim to be the favourite neighbour for the district. Bouncy castle, arts and crafts, clown, magician for the little ones, live singing and music for the grown-ups in the evening left no room for boredom or gloom. Even the rain that set in at the blue hour didn't stand a chance.

A traditional pillar of the nahkauf Heart Week is the opportunity to throw small amounts into the donation pyramid at the checkout, rounding up the purchase amount, so to speak. Jörg Kiel, store manager at nahkauf Schaum, wanted celebrities at the checkout as the crowning glory of the month of hearts and the final donation motivation. The choice fell not on political office-holders but on spiritual dignitaries. Without further ado, he asked the Protestant and Catholic pastors. Both agreed to engage in dialogue with people at the other meeting place and sat down at the market checkout for a good cause. This made it easy for the customers to round up. Or, as the Catholic priest Togar Pasaribu put it: "nahkauf is the place to be".
