Local partnership Asparagus
Exchange at eye level
by Claudia Grenzer (Video) und Achim Bachhausen

During the season, up to 100 per cent of the strawberries and asparagus in REWE stores are grown locally. We present two farms as examples. The first is Esser's farm in Vettweiß.

Eagerly awaited, it has been back for a few weeks now: asparagus, fresh from the field. This can be taken quite literally. After all, if the producers are in the neighbourhood, the distances to the nearest REWE store and therefore to the customers are short. We accompanied the fine vegetables from the field to the market and spoke to those involved in the process about current opportunities and challenges.

The producer
Heinrich Esser, farmer in Vettweiß-Kelz (Rhineland): "We currently supply around 30 REWE stores in the surrounding area, some of which have been doing so for 20 years. The asparagus that is harvested today at midday can be bought in the REWE stores tomorrow morning. The local partnerships are very important for us because they allow us to distribute our products to many customers. That wouldn't be possible with the farm shop alone."

„Regionality is becoming increasingly important as a differentiating feature.“
Alexander Bell, REWE merchant in Blankenheim

The merchant
Alexander Bell: "The regional range is becoming increasingly important as a differentiating feature. The relationship with the Esser family is definitely familiar. Everything is personal, from the order to the delivery. The Esser family supplies us five times a week during the asparagus season and usually comes to the store once or twice a season with their asparagus peeling machine. We make an event out of it with a wine tasting. There's a lot of hype. The network of regional partners is immensely important for us so that we don't just use the topic of Sustainability as an advertising gimmick, but actually live it. We now have over 50 local and regional partners."

Both green and white have their own special flavour. I find the white asparagus more unique and fresher during the season and have a special appetite for it then.
