Commitment to the market
A shopping trolley for Anton
by Michaela Thömmes

Anton is nine years old and has Down's syndrome. REWE salesman Rade Savic has purchased a special shopping trolley so that he and his mum Nicole can do their weekly shopping in a more needs-based and relaxed way. Since then, "Anton's speedster" has become an integral part of the store in Küps, Bavaria.

one: Mr Savic, how did you come up with the idea of buying this special shopping trolley?

Rade Savic : It wasn't my idea - I actually had no awareness of the issue. I'm very grateful to Nicole for approaching me. She has been a customer for many years and knocked on my office door one day. Nicole explained to me that Anton no longer fitted into the standard child seat. However, because the boy likes to roam the aisles and there is a risk of him getting lost, Nicole needed a pushchair with a sufficiently large seat.

one: How time-consuming was the procurement of such a shopping trolley?

Rade Savic: It was surprisingly easy. The trolley I chose even has its own SAP number as part of the inventory order (editor's note: the "Ben's Cart" shopping trolley model is available throughout REWE via the internal ordering system). So I ordered the speedster and called Nicole as soon as it arrived. Anton immediately approved of his new vehicle after the test round. Since then, the car has always been parked in the front entrance area, accessible to everyone. It is also occasionally used by other customers, but never misused.

one: What makes the shopping trolley so special? This is what Anton's speedster looks like: The "Ben's Cart" model has a larger seat and five instead of four wheels to make the cart easier to manoeuvre (Copyright: Wanzl)

Rade Savic: The main feature is the large seat, which can accommodate children weighing up to 35 kilograms. Instead of the usual crossbar, the trolley is manoeuvred using handles on the left and right - this works particularly well thanks to the fifth wheel. There is a safety belt to prevent the child from falling out. Another advantage for Nicole is that Anton can no longer randomly take things out of the trolley and scatter them around the store because it is deeper than a normal shopping trolley.

one: Are there any other purchases planned for people with special needs?

Rade Savic: Yes! I'm currently waiting for the delivery of another special shopping trolley that has a higher seat and padding for the head so that it is somewhat fixed - there are impairments for which this function can be a great relief, for example in the case of paralysis.

The topic of inclusion is now firmly anchored in our market. We are trying to look at everyday things from a different angle and develop a feel for the needs of all our customers. That's why we dedicated our first summer festival in mid-July to the topic of inclusion: the local associations joined our employees with many helping hands to run the food and drinks stands. The proceeds from this summer party will go to an association in Kronach for people with special needs, to which Anton and his mum also belong. The other part will be donated to other local organisations.

one: Mr Savic, thank you very much for talking to us!

APPRECIATION... as an employee of DER Travel and Tourism in Frankfurt/M., I was particularly pleased about the article from my home district of Kronach. You often read about projects in big cities, but such appreciative work usually starts at the grass roots - in this case - in rural areas. Chapeau, Mr Savic & team, all the best for Anton & Nicole! Summer greetings to my home in Upper Franconia, alex
