A climate-friendly and more sustainable world is conceivable if we rethink together. REWE is convinced of this - and is launching #umdenkbar to communicate its long-standing and current sustainability initiatives. By purchasing REWE Bio and REWE Beste Wahl products, customers automatically support the NABU climate fund to save the moors. And all REWE Group employees can also help the environment by taking part in a joint climate challenge.
Climate protection is the order of the day. Germany wants to reduce itsCO2 emissions by at least 65 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990. REWE Group also wants to do its part, whether at its headquarters, stores, warehouses or travel agencies. The use of green electricity, fewer emissions along the supply chain and more transparency about the origin of organic milk and meat thanks to QR codes are just a few examples.
Studies show: Consumers care about the climate. For more than two thirds, it is the most pressing problem. At the same time, they criticise the fact that many people talk about climate protection but do not act. They also expect more initiative from companies. REWE is therefore communicating its wide-ranging sustainability activities on all channels under the motto #umdenkbar. The idea: With #umdenkbar, REWE shows what is possible when everyone flips the switch together. Because a climate-friendly and more sustainable world is conceivable if we rethink together.
Support the NABU Climate Fund with your purchases
Making sustainable shopping as easy as possible for REWE customers is also part of #umdenkbar: By purchasing REWE Bio and REWE Beste Wahl products, customers automatically make a contribution to the newly established NABU climate fund, which REWE will support with at least 25 million euros over the next five years. The NABU climate fund will be used to implement nature conservation projects with a positive impact on biodiversity and climate and to support the rewetting of moorland in Germany. Why peatlands? Because healthy peatlands are among the most effective carbon stores in the world, as they bind twice as much carbon as all of the world's forests. However, 95 per cent of peatlands in Germany are currently dry. By revitalising them, there is great potential for climate protection on our own doorstep.
PENNY is also getting involved and providing practical tips on how to make shopping more climate-friendly. The "climate-light" balloon labels products that make shopping more sustainable. At the forefront is the vegan own brand "Food for Future". It received the PETA Vegan Food Award in 2021. PENNY and its customers share interesting recipes on social media under #foodforfuture.
It's not just customers who can help save the world. Employees can also do something for the climate together and reduce their CO2e emissions from 15 to 28 August as part of a joint campaign.
The aim of the campaign is to save20,000 kgofCO2e1 together
Taking part benefits the climate twice over! For every kilogramme ofCO2esaved, 5 cents will be donated to the NABU climate fund.
1CO2eis the abbreviation for CO2 equivalents, which is the total sum of all greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, F-gases).

We were very pleased to read what great ideas you have shared and are already implementing. :-) We are also happy to include your many suggestions and proposals for improvement as topics. Many thanks and best regards from your Climate Challenge team
Dear Climate Challenge Team Unfortunately, I only found out about the great challenge today. Please tell me how I can take part in the training to become a sustainability officer. For our market in Bad Säckingen.... Greetings Nicole Schwenne
Televisions in the casino A long time ago, I pointed out that televisions in the casino are not relaxing and consume energy unnecessarily.
Maybe people see it differently today. I don't think we need the TVs, a nice chat with colleagues is usually enough to relax.
I have been used to switching off the monitors and docking station after work for years instead of leaving them on standby. This also saves a lot of electricity, especially at weekends, during holidays and other longer absences
Climate challenge: a great thing. Central location in Porz: There are offices that don't get any sun all day, so they don't get extremely hot even when it's 33 degrees outside. All rooms are cooled down across the board, so that more than one employee works in a jacket at the height of summer
It's difficult for administrative staff to eat a vegan diet (if you don't want to eat salad every day), so what would it be like to switch from meat-free alternatives to vegan in general? We would save a lot of CO2 and there are thousands of delicious recipes and vegan alternatives to cheese, eggs and meat
Climate Challenge... Great. The lights are on all day in the old S90 casino and in the corridors... that would be a start.
Or use PV + battery to ensure that we generate this "useless" electricity ourselves and don't have to buy it in
And then there are all the monitors, docking stations and the like that are happily running on standby. Given our size, there are certainly more than 1000 devices that run uselessly on standby day after day (or night after night) and consume electricity. Couldn't this be remedied with a switch socket (at table height) or by instructing the cleaning staff / security staff to switch off the monitors?
