Little effort, big impact: Nahkauf stores promoted biodiversity in local gardens with nesting boxes for native songbirds. A campaign that encouraged the youngest customers in particular to protect nature.
The boys and girls from the "Haus der kleinen Wunder" day care centre in Waldmünchen went to the forest with Nahkauf.
To mark this year's Sustainability Week, Nahkauf joined forces with Nabu to give garden birds a home. The campaign went down extremely well with retailers and participating sponsors such as kindergartens, schools and local youth fire brigade groups: Working diligently together, the young conservationists enthusiastically built 4,500 nesting boxes for titmice, sparrows and the like. The online competition, in which a total of 30 kits for the potential bird nurseries were raffled off, attracted additional attention.
Years of commitment to species conservation
The teams at the 450 nahkauf stores have been committed to regional species conservation since 2021. "We started with nesting aids and flower beds to support bees and insects. Last year, we gave birds water for the hot days of the year," says project manager Annegret Meyer-Nieuwenhuis.
Sleeping, breeding, seeking shelter
This year's action week was dedicated to bird protection with the construction of suitable nesting boxes, as there is usually a lack of natural breeding opportunities in the home garden, such as natural cavities in old and rotten trees or suitable niches on buildings.
Colourful nurseries for native birds
Nesting boxes not only offer cavity-nesting songbirds the opportunity to raise their offspring in spring. The wooden box also fulfils important tasks in winter. Whether tits, nuthatches, squirrels or butterflies - even the most weather-resistant outdoor professionals appreciate a warm roost. As birds constantly have to maintain a higher body temperature than mammals at 39 to 42 degrees, they burn a lot of body fat during the cold season. Sparrows, for example, build veritable winter nests in which they snuggle up when it freezes.
"We are delighted that our garden of biodiversity continues to grow every year with our nationwide nahkauf retailers, their sponsors and Nabu, because it is a matter close to our hearts to inspire as many people as possible to protect species," said national nahkauf sales manager Mathis Neth, taking stock with satisfaction.
