Goal achieved: 20,000 kg CO₂e saved through participatory campaign

Whether it's giving up the car or eating a climate-friendly diet, numerous colleagues from REWE Group have joined forces in recent weeks to protect the climate. Now it's mission complete! Read here to find out what has saved the most CO₂e.

Want to bet that together we can save 20,000 kgofCO2e1? That was the motto of this year's climate challenge, in which REWE Group employeeswere able to reduce theirCO2e emissions together. Numerous colleagues from all sales lines took part - switching from cars to bikes, making sure they ate a climate-friendly diet and paying attention to their electricity consumption.

Now they have achieved their goal together: together, the participants were able to reduce their CO2e emissionsby a total of 21,940 kg! That's the equivalent of driving a medium-sized car around the world 4.2 times. Most of the kilograms ofCO2ewere saved by using green electricity in the flat or house.

Thanks to the joint commitment of the REWE Group colleagues, a donation total of €1,097.00 was raised. REWE Group rounded up the donation to €1,500. The donation will benefit the climate in two ways, as the amount will be invested in the NABU climate fund, which promotes the rewetting of moors.

The lucky winners of the climate challenge have been notified and will soon receive their prizes.

Many thanks to everyone who took part!

The following testimonials from colleagues show what a difference seemingly small measures can make. Because climate protection pays off all year round.

Sven Enders, toom Baumarkt DIY store Altenkirchen

"I've been driving an electric car for almost a year and have a work bike. I have installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of my house. I recently started producing my domestic hot water using a heat pump water storage tank. We've also bought chickens to reduce our organic waste."

Judith Maier, Project Manager Sustainability Ware
Travelling by bike

"I enjoy cycling in my everyday life and on longer trips and eat a predominantly vegetarian diet. As I enjoy being outdoors a lot and appreciate nature and its beauty, it's important to me to do my bit for climate protection, even through small habits."

Louisa Vollbach, dual study programme in retail management
Happy about the vegetarian canteen offer

"I've been eating a vegan diet for five years and usually bring something to eat with me or just have a side dish and vegetables in the canteen. I was very happy about the vegan schnitzel, sausages and nuggets including sauce this week! I would be very happy if there was a larger vegetarian (and vegan if demand allows) selection soon! :)"

Michaela Thömmes, Corporate Communications Officer
Building habits into everyday life

"I generally travel to work by train, eat less meat and usually switch off appliances completely instead of leaving them in standby mode. I haven't turned my everyday life inside out because of the Climate Challenge. But it's amazing to see how muchCO2 you can save. If you take a vegetarian day, you already save a whole kilo. That motivates me to incorporate such habits into my everyday life even more often."

Vegan restaurant recommendations

"As I only cycle or use public transport and already eat a vegan diet, I haven't been able to increase my carbon footprint in these areas. However, to give colleagues a bit of inspiration to eat more vegan, I can highly recommend the following restaurants in Cologne: Die Eisdielerin - delicious vegan savoury and sweet waffles; Bagatelle V - veggie tapas bar; Mashery Hummus-Kitchen - delicious oriental dishes.
One point of attention that I was able to take away from the challenge, however, is to switch off stand-by devices. I switch off the docking station at work when I go home and always unplug the toaster at home. In future, however, I would like to use power strips with switches!"

With a folding bike instead of a convertible in the climate challenge

"Driven by the ever-increasing importance of a mobility transition, I recently sold my beloved old convertible and reinvested the proceeds in a folding bike. Since this week, my new 'zero-emission convertible' has (so far) reliably accompanied me on my journey to work in combination with the regional train. This not only saves me money, but also a lot of nerves after work - without traffic jams and searching for a parking space. Thanks to the climate challenge and the activity tracker, I've been able to track exactly how I'm savingCO2 and have been even more encouraged and motivated in my decision."
