Hot instead of scrap: over 7,000 IT devices rescued

Together with AfB, our REWE Group Austria celebrated the 10th anniversary of their partnership on Monday (11 September). Since then, AfB has processed a total of 7,062 IT and mobile devices with a total weight of 38 tonnes from our colleagues in Austria.

Of these, 82 per cent were prepared for remarketing after data destruction, hardware testing, spare parts procurement, repair, upgrading and cleaning. The salvage of electrical appliances over the last 10 years has saved around 780 tonnes of CO2, over 460 tonnes of valuable raw materials and more than 5.5 million litres of water.

In terms of concrete resource savings compared to new purchases, this corresponds to
- 777,840 kg CO2 (equivalents)
- 461,703 kg of raw materials saved (equivalents)
- 2,988,457 kWh reduced primary energy consumption
- 5,550,139 litres less water consumption

"Ensuring socially and ecologically sustainable IT operations and dealing with issues such as climate neutrality, energy transition and sensible resource management is a top priority for us at REWE International AG," says Chief Information Officer (CIO) Martin Fluch. "Maximising the reusability of our hardware and professional recycling play a key role in this. The successful partnership with AfB not only helps us to make a major contribution to the circular economy, but also to fulfil our social responsibility as an employer."

Johannes Winkler also emphasises the importance of having a local recycling partner: "Especially in IT, it is particularly important for us to use our resources sparingly. This includes not only energy-efficient devices, which we also configure accordingly to achieve the best possible mix of performance and energy savings, but also the entire life cycle of the hardware itself. With AfB, we have had a partner at our side for many years who not only makes it possible to utilise older IT equipment, but also to continue to use it sensibly. AfB's local proximity also emphasises our sustainability efforts, as our IT equipment is not sent across Europe for refurbishment."

Sustainability is not a passing trend for the REWE Group in Austria - all sustainability strategies and projects are geared towards the long term and great importance is attached to climate protection measures. REWE Group in Austria maintains an intensive dialogue with its stakeholders when implementing its sustainability strategy. Lasting improvements can only be realised if everyone involved works towards the common goals. In this way, the proportion of more sustainable products and services is constantly being expanded and sustainable consumption is becoming accessible to ever larger sections of the population.

By cooperating with AfB, we are promoting the creation of jobs for people with disabilities - not only in Austria, but also in Germany. AfB GmbH is Europe's largest non-profit IT company. Through certified IT remarketing, AfB helps to save environmental resources. AfB employs 650 people at 20 locations in Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Slovakia, half of whom have disabilities.
