nahkauf shows its heart again
Half a million euros for children
by Achim Bachhausen

Once again this year, nahkauf retailers continued a tried and tested tradition and donated to children in need. The impressive donation sum was announced in front of an audience of millions.

As part of this year's "Heart Month", many of the 456 nahkauf retailers across Germany have shown outstanding performance. The impressive result of their joint efforts: 500,000 euros for "Bild hilft e.V./Ein Herz für Kinder", made possible by the loyal nahkauf customers. The most eager fundraisers were traditionally rewarded with an eventful weekend in Berlin, the highlight of which was a reception at the Axel Springer publishing house. As it was not possible to attend the charity gala again this year due to the coronavirus, the symbolic cheque handover took place in advance at the Axel Springer publishing house. The obligatory group photo in front of the Brandenburg Gate, this time including a spontaneous flash mob, was a must

For more than ten years, nahkauf has been a committed supporter of the Bild aid organisation "Ein Herz für Kinder". Since then, a total of four million euros has been raised. Always a highlight: Christmassy Berlin, here on Bebel-Platz

Instead of the traditional Heart Week, nahkauf dedicated the whole of September to a good cause for the first time. The nahkauf teams put their heart and soul into collecting money for needy children during "Heart Month". Customers were able to donate their empties vouchers or round up their purchases to the nearest euro. But many nahkauf teams did a lot more, putting local celebrities at the till, organising children's, summer and sports festivals or inviting youngsters to decorate the nahkauf store.

On Saturday evening (17 December), the time had come again: in the ZDF fundraising gala with presenter Johannes B. Kerner and a high celebrity density, over three million TV viewers found out the total nahkauf donation amount: 500,000 euros will be transferred to the "Bild hilft e.V." account this year.

During the three-hour TV gala, more than 70 stars from society, sport, politics, shows and social media answered viewers' calls on the donation phones. At the end of the programme, the proud donation total of 24,236,721 million euros stood on the red heart.

Sarah Majorczyk, 1st Chairwoman of BILD hilft e.V. "Ein Herz für Kinder": "In these depressing times of war and inflation, many people have too little. This makes every single donation all the more valuable. Because it is the children who are suffering most in the crisis. That's why it's particularly important this year to know that every donation to 'Ein Herz für Kinder' goes directly to the children in need without any deductions."
