From now on, travellers and employees at Frankfurt Airport can enjoy a new convenience offer around the clock. Lekkerland opened its first REWE To Go smart store in an airport in Terminal 1.

German premiere in Frankfurt am Main: the new REWE To Go in Terminal 1 is the first cashierless shop in an airport in Germany. Airport operator Fraport and Lekkerland officially opened the unmanned convenience shop on Wednesday (19 February). The pilot shop is located in the public arrivals area of Terminal 1 on Level 1 in Section B and can be used by visitors, travellers and employees alike.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, the store does not require cash registers or sales staff. Instead, cameras record which products customers take out. When they leave the shop, the invoice amount is automatically debited from the cashless payment method that was scanned when they entered. Customers receive the receipt via their smartphone. Accepted means of payment are Girocards, credit and debit cards from Visa and Mastercard as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

570 items to choose from
Customers can buy fresh snacks such as sandwiches and salads, drinks and coffee specialities as well as ice cream, snacks and confectionery in the 70 square metre pilot shop. However, selected travel and drugstore items such as charging cables and toothbrushes as well as food are also part of the range, which includes around 570 items.

"Travellers, visitors and employees will find a wide range of options for shopping and catering at Frankfurt Airport. The new REWE To Go is an innovative addition to our range of around 280 shops, service providers and catering outlets," says Karl-Heinz Dietrich, Head of Retail and Letting Management at Fraport AG.

"Frankfurt Airport is a perfect location for this special REWE To Go, which enables fast and convenient supply around the clock," adds Mehmet Tözge, Vice President Smart Stores at Lekkerland.

The new REWE To Go is a pilot shop with which Lekkerland wants to gain experience with the use of its smart store concept at such a prominent location.

"We have intensively tested and developed the concept over the past few years. Now we are excited to see how it is received by customers at Frankfurt Airport," says Mehmet Tözge.

20 unmanned shops nationwide
Lekkerland operates more than 20 unmanned shops across Germany. Locations include loading bays, hospitals, railway stations and office complexes. The company utilises a range of different technologies.
