REWEformer Entrepreneurial Children's Network R.U.N.
40 Kaufleutekinder on tour in Cologne
by Achim Bachhausen

In 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, the sons and daughters of our retailers founded their own network, the REWEformer Unternehmerkinder Netzwerk, or R.U.N. for short, under the direction of the Communication Retailers division. After months of exchanging ideas in virtual space, 40 entrepreneurial children met in person for the first time.

They are young, 18 to mid-30s, and they have at least one parent who runs a REWE or nahkauf store. Some have already taken on responsibility in the family business, others are about to join it. Still others are not considering joining their parents' store for the time being. The path was not mapped out for everyone. Some initially learnt or studied something completely different.

But what the children of merchants have in common is that they represent at least the second generation of the company and they all face similar challenges. There is no harm in sharing experiences, exchanging good ideas within a network and at the same time getting to know the many facets of the REWE Group world.

The network now has around 140 entrepreneurial children. After a long period of purely online communication, 40 of them came together in Cologne for the first time. We captured their voices and moods.

Jana Olufs, R.U.N. project manager: "In a very short space of time, over 140 entrepreneurial children have already become part of R.U.N.. This confirms the desire of the next generation to network together. With R.U.N., we want to promote dialogue and at the same time provide an insight into the wide range of opportunities at REWE. It's all the better to be able to do this in person for the first time at an event. In the future, we would like to offer an annual face-to-face event and continue to organise digital workshops throughout the year."

Sascha Lutz, Würzburg (South Region): "I liked it a lot. The atmosphere is great. I'm happy to see the people. When the trip was offered, I said yes straight away, because when else do you get the opportunity? What did I like best? Everything! The programme is great. Before we set off, I had time to look round the other Pick&Go store in Cologne. REWE Richrath in the Opernpassage was also very interesting. It's always exciting to see what other retail families are doing. You can learn so much, also from the conversations in the evening. I think it's exciting to see what REWE is doing, for example sponsoring FC Köln, which is a good thing."

Verena Aupperle, Fellbach (Southwest region): "I found it very, very exciting and also thrilling to get to know lots of merchants' kids and young merchants from different regions. You immediately realise that we are all on the same wavelength and that we all have the same challenges. It's good to exchange ideas and find out how you can tackle the same problem differently. My highlight so far has been the stadium tour. I was already familiar with Pick & Go. It's an exciting topic. But as a self-employed person, I wouldn't dare go there yet."

Marc Amshove, Dortmund (REWE Dortmund): "The network is really cool. It's just nice to get to know other people from the regions. We can quickly learn from each other. I think it's great that this network exists. The atmosphere is very relaxed, harmonious and open, without any handbrakes. Nobody holds back with their opinion. My highlight: the football stadium. It was great to take a look behind the scenes here."

Vivienne Fack, Arnstadt (Region East): "The day is very packed, but I think that's a good thing. You don't get bored. You see a lot of new things, including things that are not typical for the retail trade. It's all very well organised by REWE. My highlight was the cathedral, because I'd never been to Cologne before. I'm not a football fan, but the visit to the stadium was impressive. I found out about the network through my mum, she drew my attention to it. And that's when I said it would be great to be able to exchange ideas in this way and see other perspectives. The point is that if there are problems in the market, you can talk about them. To realise that you're not alone and that there are other solutions."

Johanna Fiedler (Region East): "Teams are different, you don't really get to know each other online. I really like the atmosphere and I'm glad we travelled here. You get to know a lot in your own region, but the fact that people from all over Germany come together here is something else. You find out what other regions are doing."

Luisa Stockhausen, Erkrath (Region West): "I was only recently made aware of the network through an email from the Communication Retailers department. However, I already knew some of the participants at the meeting in Cologne from my dual study programme and was pleased to see them again on this occasion. I found the attendance days in Cologne very pleasant, the atmosphere was relaxed and open and offered many opportunities for dialogue. My highlight was the market tours. I was impressed by the variety of design options. For the future, I would like to see regular dialogue and more market visits. In general, I'm very interested in learning about different concepts and new technological developments that we entrepreneurial kids can implement."

Philipp Lenk, Bochum (REWE Dortmund): "It's going very well, it's easy to network here. I also know from other companies that a network like this can help in many situations because we all deal with the same problems. You can ask many people on many levels, how do you do it? The advantage of this network is that we are all the same age. We understand each other, it works, it's just nice. Besides: Contacts can never do any harm. They only hurt those who don't have them. That's why it's a great thing. My personal highlight was the communicative Kölsch drinking in the evening, sitting together."

Store checks and more

Our REWE retailers have been well networked with each other for many years. After the next generation also expressed a desire for a joint network, Vanessa Bau, Head of Communications for Retailers, and Jana Olufs, R.U.N. Project Manager, took up the challenge and brought together a number of young people from all regions - so far exclusively online. The enthusiasm for the first meeting in person was all the greater, especially as the programme had a lot to offer, including Storechecks at REWE Richrath and Pick&Go on Luxemburger Straße, sightseeing at Cologne Cathedral and the RheinenergieStadion as well as a visit to the Scarlet One warehouse location.
