The best self-service department is in the east

For the second time, the trade magazine Lebensmittelpraxis was looking for the best bakery departments in the country. One REWE region stood out in particular with three winners. But the best-placed bakery comes from a different corner.

In Susan Tscheschlog's REWE store in Schildow, no-one can avoid the self-service bread counter. The department offers a wide range of products that doesn't have to hide from its in-house competitor, the sublet bakery in the checkout area. Customers are happy to help themselves here and also make active use of the pre-order service, for example for sandwiches. The popularity is reflected in the economic figures. The number of customers and revenue are growing at double-digit rates. As a result, the store won "Gold" in the "Self-service baked goods" competition category. In the same category, the second and two third places also went to REWE: silver went to the REWE store at Hauptstraße 7b in Sasbach, while the bronze medals went to REWE Reitmann in Bernburg and the REWE store on Vogesenallee in Kehl. These stores also impressed with their concept, product range, freshness and ambience.
The team from REWE in Lörrach Am alten Markt also won bronze, but in the "Service and self-service" category.

No bakery expertise without donuts (or doughnuts). The sweet doughnut curls also sell like hot cakes in Kehl.

The competition
Lebensmittelpraxis awards points for key figures such as revenue and customer frequency . The stores with the most points are shortlisted. The best stores in each category are nominated. In phase two, the bakery departments are visited anonymously. The inspectors proceed according to the test report: they observe, shop and ask questions. And sometimes they even let themselves be tempted to eat. They award stars for what they have experienced and give reasons for their final assessment.
