Trainee sustainability projects
"Sustainability is not as difficult as you might think"
by Sylvia Hannstein

Doing something good for the environment and strengthening team spirit at the same time: That was the wish of REWE Group's central trainees for this year's sustainability projects. Did it come true? Which topics did they focus on this year, and why? We asked the project groups.

Colourful flowering areas for bees and insects
For a greener environment - the Cologne seed balls

The team: Kemal Adyakar, Muhammed Ali Caglar, Damian Langowski, Lisa Schenk, Jonas Schneider.

The project: "Our project focusses on Cologne's mostly dreary green spaces, which can no longer provide bees and other insects with a sufficient habitat. True to the motto 'Cologne is colourful!', we spent several days forming seed balls in workshops together with children from HöVi-Land. The aim was to create colourful flowering areas for bees and insects. Our colleagues from toom in Grevenbroich, who donated the materials, were a great help. We decided in favour of this project because we believe that public awareness of bee mortality is low. We therefore wanted to actively tackle this issue and help to increase the habitat a little.

The motivation in the team for this topic was very high right from the start - which made the realisation very easy, as everyone was fully committed. And we were able to experience how positive it is to work in a diverse team, as everyone was able to contribute their strengths in an ideal way."

„Sustainability is not as difficult as you might think. There are many opportunities right in front of us, we just have to seize them. You also have to be prepared to learn and grow from and with each other. Our internal cohesion has been strengthened by the project.“
Birdhouses for the kindergarten
Panama's peeps

The team: Lioba Funk, Selina Drecnik, Lina Kanis, Zülal Angun, Silvia Fuchs, Anna Arlyuk

The project: "Following the instructions from NABU, we built four nesting boxes (two each for half-cave breeders and cave breeders) and two feeders and painted them together with the pre-school children from the Panama daycare centre in Kerpen. The nesting boxes and feeders were then hung up there. As the Panama daycare centre has a lot of green space, several fruit trees and a relatively large bird population, the nesting boxes and feeders are in good hands there.

Our aim was to draw attention to the fact that birds are increasingly lacking naturally occurring food sources and nesting sites. At the same time, we wanted to help the animals and awaken the children's interest in nature and nature conservation through creative work."

„It is a positive feeling to have planned and implemented the project independently and at the same time to have given the children an understanding of the added value of Sustainability. The versatility of the project meant that we were challenged in various aspects and everyone was able to contribute their strengths.“
Collecting rubbish at the Groov
A clean Cologne - Four trainees for the environment

The team: Marius Buchmüller, Lilli Wolf, Sarah Lichenheim, Till Hahne

The project: "Together with pupils from the Joseph-DuMont-Berufskolleg vocational college in Cologne, we set off to Cologne-Zündorf at the beginning of September to collect rubbish. The campaign took place in cooperation with the Cologne Rhine Clean-up Command Unit (KRAKE e.V.), which provided rubbish tongs, rubbish bags and gloves.

Our aim was to collect as much rubbish as possible from the banks of the Rhine at Zündorfer Groov to prevent it from entering the Rhine and thus the North Sea. A positive side effect: the Rhine landscape looked much nicer without the rubbish. We felt the campaign was a complete success: All participants were able to get an idea of how important it is to look after the environment and how easy it is to do your bit to clean up pollution - right on your doorstep."

„All the participants had a lot of fun and did something good for the environment at the same time. The positive feedback from passers-by also confirmed our project and gave everyone a good feeling. Implementing the project in our trainee team was a great experience - thanks to the lively dialogue and also because we had to overcome one or two challenges together.“
Sustainability in the market
Wooden goods dividers

The team: Maren Piel, Julia Brose, Benedikt Steinbacher, Simon Batschkuhn, Sophie Rose

The project: "Our team has set itself the task of helping to make shopping at the REWE supermarket more sustainable and ecological. We focussed on the last step during the shopping process: The moment when customers place the goods on the checkout conveyor belt. We realised that the conventional product separators that are used at this point are still made of plastic.

We then compared plastic and wooden dividers and came to the conclusion that the production and disposal of wood in particular is much more sustainable than that of polycarbonate. So our decision was clear - we want to make a change here!

To make the dividers stand out immediately, we painted them with typical Cologne colours and motifs and enlisted the help of the kids from the inclusive Cologne kindergarten Sommersprossen. We then displayed the dividers in the market in Cologne-Dellbrück.

We then found a Cologne-themed market in Cologne-Dellbrück that wanted to run the project with us as a pilot market. It was clear right from the start that we also wanted to draw attention to the topic of inclusion as part of our project, so we decided to commission an inclusive joinery in Münster to produce the dividers."

„So far, we have received great feedback from employees in the store as well as from interested customers. We also came 9th in the REWE Group Star competition, which means we can take part in the German Sustainability Award on 2 December.“

Really great projects again this year - I also followed the teams' presentations on 08.11.22 very closely. Once again some great ideas have been realised, congratulations and keep up the good work!
