REWE Group once again recognised as an LGBTIQ+-friendly employer
by Julia Dopjans

REWE Group is one of the most LGBTIQ+-friendly companies in Germany. This is confirmed by the "Pride Index" awarded by the Uhlala Group for the fifth time. We were able to improve significantly compared to the previous year.

We promote diversity and have a successful diversity management system. This was once again confirmed by independent auditors as part of the Uhlala Group's Pride Champion Audit: REWE Group was awarded the Gold Employer Seal for the second time in a row. The seal certifies companies that use holistic LGBTIQ+ diversity management to create structures in which all employees feel valued and can contribute.

„At REWE Group, we live diversity every day and our LGBTIQ network di.to. has been committed to tolerance and acceptance for over 10 years. It is important to have this commitment assessed from the outside and it shows us what we are already doing well, what can be improved and where we still need to start. The goal is always an open and colourful coexistence“
Martina Weinhold, Teamlead Training, Sustainability & Projects and one of the three national spokespersons for the internal di.to network at REWE Group

E-learnings planned
The Pride Champion seal is acquired through a rigorous examination in the form of an (online) audit. Based on 75 questions, divided into four categories, the audit process enables the company to take stock of its current commitment and identifies potential for improvement. Compared to the previous year, REWE Group was able to improve its result once again and achieved 90 per cent of the possible points - an increase of ten per cent. According to Martina Weinhold, the publication of a guideline on gender-appropriate language and numerous campaigns organised by the di.to. network as part of the network's tenth anniversary were decisive factors in this.

But that's not all - further campaigns are already planned. In the first quarter of next year, two partly voluntary diversity e-learning courses for senior managers will be launched - a measure that has emerged from the PRIDE Index 2022, among other things. The topics: Inclusion and LGBTIQ.

The long road to equality
Equal rights in the workplace: what should have long been a matter of course still has a long way to go. In 2022, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) published a study in cooperation with Bielefeld University. The subject of the study was LGBTIQ+ people on the labour market. The result: 30 per cent of respondents stated that they had experienced discrimination in the workplace in the last two years. In order to avoid disadvantage and discrimination, 31 per cent of participants do not come out to their colleagues. The figure is as high as 40 per cent towards superiors.

Where can you find the "Guide to gender-appropriate language"?

If you have a good, fair store manager, Rewe is the best employer, unfortunately this is not always the case, but in terms of social benefits, Rewe is a great employer.
