REWE Group has published its first overarching guideline for all own-brand juices, nectars and fruit juice drinks.
Fruit juice is one of the three most popular drinks in Germany after water and soft drinks. The conventional cultivation of fruit often takes place in monoculture and damages the environment and biodiversity through deforestation, high pesticide use and fertilisers. Working conditions on large plantations are also often precarious: risks include human rights violations such as child and forced labour, incomes that do not provide a living wage, unpaid overtime, discrimination and a lack of occupational health and safety.
In order to improve the social, ecological and economic conditions in juice production, REWE Group, as a pioneer in the German food retail sector, is pursuing the following goal: by the end of 2025, 50 per cent of all own-brand juices, nectars and fruit juice drinks in the REWE and PENNY range are to be certified according to Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, Naturland, Organic, SAI FSA Bronze / Silver / Gold or GlobalG.A.P.. These certification systems guarantee high standards in cultivation and a more transparent supply chain.
In 2020, REWE Group already achieved its goal of converting 100 per cent of direct orange juice and orange juice from concentrate in its own-brand range to Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or organic by the end of 2025. Pineapple juice has also only been available at REWE and PENNY as certified products since the end of 2018.
