Retailers, the Management Board and the Supervisory Board of REWE Dortmund Großhandel eG looked back on a challenging 2022 at this year's Annual General Meeting. The war in Ukraine and the associated gas and energy crisis also characterised the economic environment in the Ruhr and Rhine regions. High inflation and sharply rising prices weighed on consumer sentiment and demand behaviour.

"Despite this challenging environment, REWE Dortmund Großhandel eG can once again look back on a successful business year in which the very good result of the previous year was once again exceeded," reported Supervisory Board Chairman Stefan Lenk. According to CEO Andreas Schmidt, the start to 2023 was also pleasing overall. By the beginning of June, the approximately 400 stores had recorded an increase in sales of 7.6 per cent. The new shops opened since January had got off to a good start. However, this success is no coincidence, as competition in REWE Dortmund's sales region remains fierce. In order to be successful in this environment, price performance is once again becoming increasingly important in addition to service and product range, Schmidt noted. The cooperative also invested heavily: the first fully electric lorries were put into operation in 2022 and a new administration building was completed. 130 stores already offered the pick-up service in the financial year, a further step towards digitalisation.

Supervisory Board members confirmed in office
Supervisory Board positions were up for election this year as scheduled. The three retailers Lukas Sanecki, Christian Symalla and Christoph Steverding stood for re-election and were unanimously elected for a further term of office by the 144 members of the cooperative present in the Börsensaal. Works Council Chairman Jochem Nehm and Ingeborg Tutschkus stepped down from the ranks of employee representatives. The employees of the subsidiary REWE Dortmund SE & Co KG appointed Nicole Hagemann and Markus Handschuh to the Supervisory Board in their place.

25 years at REWE Dortmund
The independent retailers have been the face, heart and pulse of REWE Dortmund since it was founded 110 years ago. In 2022, the Engel family in Unna-Massen, Runkel in Mettmann, Kamp in Dortmund and Freidank (also in Dortmund) celebrated 25 years of belonging to their cooperative. In some cases, however, the respective retail companies were founded much longer ago.
