Make good use of small change at REWE
The Coinstar makes it possible
by Thomas Bonrath

Customers can exchange coins for vouchers in 1,000 REWE stores. This is made possible by change machines.

Small change is annoying. Especially when a lot of coins have accumulated over time. But how do you get rid of them? Since 2019, REWE has been offering customers a service that allows them to exchange their small change quickly and easily with Coinstar coin exchange machines. Today, 1,000 change machines are already in operation in our stores. Around 1,000 REWE stores offer their customers the opportunity to exchange small change for vouchers.

The principle is very simple: coins in, voucher out. The Coinstar machines are usually located in the entrance area of REWE stores. They are easy to use and even large quantities of unsorted euro coins can simply be poured in. This allows customers to exchange their small change for a voucher before they go shopping. Like a deposit voucher, this can be used to pay at the REWE checkout. A maximum of 500 euros can be exchanged in this way. Coinstar charges a fee of 9.9 per cent for use, which is deducted directly from the voucher. Counterfeit coins and foreign currencies are rejected. A service that is well received: around 7,800 customers use the Coinstar machines in REWE stores every day.

Successful cooperation since 2019

coinstar put the first vending machine into operation in a REWE store in 2019. Due to its great popularity with customers, 999 vending machines have been added since then. This makes REWE Coinstar's largest cooperation partner in Germany. The Seattle-based company operates over 25,000 active vending machines worldwide and is the market leader in the coin changer sector. Operation is simple.

9.9 % is the purest usury !!! I am surprised that A) so many people accept this "offer" and B) that we as REWE offer such a "rip-off" ...

As an employee, you can be happy that Rewe earns (hopefully a lot) from the 9.9% fee. From the end consumer's point of view, the fee seems completely exaggerated to me. So it's all the more surprising that 7,800 customers apparently use the service every day! Fortunately, there are also bank branches that offer the service free of charge.

It's a shame that REWE didn't negotiate better conditions with Coinstar. At a Famila in your home country, it's free of charge for the customer without a fee. But it will probably be a dying business model anyway, since fortunately you can pay by card/app almost everywhere these days ;)
