REWE delivery service launches in the Ruhr region

With the new food fulfilment centre in Bochum, the REWE delivery service is expanding its range of services. From now on, customers in the Ruhr region can order in the morning and receive their delivery on the same day. With the expansion of its offering in the Ruhr region, the REWE delivery service now reaches around 15 cities there.

This makes REWE not only an industry pioneer and market leader, but also the only delivery service for fresh food in Germany that is available in more than 90 cities plus surrounding areas with its own delivery vehicles and permanently employed drivers. In order to meet the continuing high demand even better, capacities and the range of services are being successively expanded.

REWE took over the former warehouse of the former Vosswinkel chain for the specialised delivery service warehouse in Hansastrasse in Bochum. The conversion into a food fulfilment centre was completed in record time. The REWE delivery service now supplies households in around 15 cities from the warehouse in Hansastrasse: The delivery vehicles are now on the road in Bochum, Essen, Oberhausen, Bottrop, Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Witten, Herne, Castrop-Rauxel as well as in Hattingen and Herdecke and the surrounding area. At the launch of the REWE delivery service in the Ruhr region, customers in the respective regions will benefit from a low minimum order value of 35 euros and free delivery.

Customers' online orders are picked in the warehouse and prepared for delivery by our own fleet of delivery vehicles with our own drivers. In Bochum, too, the "Pick by Light" system introduced at some REWE delivery service locations last year has made picking goods easier: All shelves in the Bochum delivery service warehouse are equipped with LED rails that communicate with employees during the picking process. The system uses the last item picked to determine the next item in the picking process and indicates the product location to the employee via light signals on the shelf.

Throughout the entire order processing procedure, strict adherence to the cold chain and quality checks of the food in question ensure guaranteed freshness. Orders are delivered quickly and directly to the customer's doorstep. "With our food fulfilment centre in Bochum, we are creating new service options for our customers in the Ruhr region. The REWE delivery service enables flexible and fast shopping from the wide REWE range without compromising on quality. Same-day deliveries, which are possible in the respective cities around the new delivery service warehouse, provide even more flexibility. In Bochum and Essen, we even offer extra-fast 'instant deliveries' in the evening hours, which allow customers to have their ordered groceries delivered just two hours in advance," says Gero Hennesen, Head of Pick-up Service & Operations Delivery Service.

For "Same Day" delivery, customers from the delivery region can shop on rewe.de/shop or via app until 1 pm and select a free delivery window from 5 pm. The service makes it possible to have orders from the selection of more than 11,000 products on rewe.de delivered to their home in the evening.

Previously, online orders in the Ruhr region were already possible for the REWE pick-up service. A look at the online shopping habits of customers shows that the West is focussing on a wide range of products: The West favours a hearty breakfast, for example with dairy products, cheese variations, cold cuts and quark dishes. In Bochum, the ingredients for the Ruhr Valley classic "currywurst fries" end up in customers' virtual shopping baskets particularly frequently. Fresh fruit and vegetables provide a healthy balance.

Are the many new-looking delivery vehicles modern 100% electrically powered vehicles or old-fashioned smelly, noisy combustion engines?
