Over the coming years, toom and ZooRoyal are planning a large-scale expansion of their shop-in-shop partnership. With a revamped brand concept, flexible modules and up to 5,000 products per outlet, the REWE Group is bringing pet supplies to where they are needed in everyday life. The toom Baumarkt DIY store in Bretten has been demonstrating how this works since July 2026.
ZooRoyal and toom Baumarkt DIY store are strategically expanding their shop-in-shop partnership. There are currently 20 locations within toom Baumarkt DIY store. Further locations are planned. In future, the concept is to be rolled out gradually to almost all toom Baumarkt DIY stores nationwide.
ZooRoyal is thus continuing to focus on a strong omnichannel presence. The revamped concept, which was recently implemented in Bretten, features a modern design, a flexible modular system covering up to 300 square metres, and a curated range of up to 5,000 items.
A recent survey* conducted by Forsa shows that toom and ZooRoyal are meeting a customer need through their partnership. Just under half of pet owners already buy pet supplies occasionally or frequently at DIY stores and find the shop-in-shop concept appealing. It is particularly well received by a younger demographic (18 to 34-year-olds). More than half find a shop-in-shop concept appealing.

For many pet owners, this has long been a reality: when shopping at a DIY store, they also pick up bits and pieces for their pets. Buying garden soil, planting balcony boxes, and picking up food for the cat or dog whilst they’re at it – all in one place.
ZooRoyal and toom aim to meet this need even better than before. The expansion of ZooRoyal shop-in-shops at toom Baumarkt DIY stores will create a convenient one-stop solution that offers added value for customers.
The approach is pragmatic. toom brings reach, footfall and a local presence with around 300 stores nationwide. ZooRoyal brings specialist retail expertise, a curated product range and a strong brand identity. The result is not a traditional DIY store shelf, but a standalone shop-in-shop format with a distinct ZooRoyal identity.
In July 2026, the first fully realised shop-in-shop based on the new concept was completed in Bretten (Baden-Württemberg). Not only does the new design of the modules align more closely than before with the ZooRoyal specialist store identity, featuring wood and petrol blue tones, but the sales area and product range also go significantly beyond what has previously been on offer in DIY stores. With floor space of up to 300 square metres and up to 5,000 products, a distinct and attractive shopping environment for pet supplies is created, which is far more than just a DIY store shelf.
ZooRoyal offers a curated core range that is considerably more compact than in specialist shops, yet significantly more extensive and specialised than a traditional DIY store shelf. The focus is on food and accessories, with a clear emphasis on dogs and cats – as well as on everyday products and own-brand items.

Marcel Bersch, Managing Director of ZooRoyal: “With our shop-in-shop concept, we’re bringing specialist retail quality to places where pet owners already do their shopping. It’s not just about convenience – it’s about genuine customer proximity. For our suppliers, this opens up a platform for product placement that other retailers simply cannot offer. With the new concept in Bretten and at other toom locations, we’re demonstrating that this is more than just a shelf – it’s brand identity in action.”
