An extraordinary attraction for dogs and their owners took place recently at the newly opened Zoo Royal specialist store: At the free dog-diving event, the dogs in attendance jumped into a nine-metre-long pool nearly 200 times – some bravely in a wide arc, others cautiously down the ramp, depending on their temperament. Animal welfare was always the top priority: each dog decided for itself how far it wanted to go.
On 31 July and 1 August, the recently opened ZooRoyal specialist pet shop in Düsseldorf hosted a special event for dogs and their owners. A wide variety of dogs – from Maltipoos to Greyhounds – were in attendance and jumped, some more confidently than others, into the specially erected pool to swim after toys or go for a dive. In total, nearly 200 four-legged friends jumped into the 9-metre-long pool. For some, it was their first time swimming, but for all of them, it was a welcome way to cool off.

Although there was no shortage of fun and games at the event, animal welfare was the top priority. Before being allowed to take part, every dog underwent a veterinary check-up and was given the all-clear. In addition, the event team kept a close eye on conditions on site throughout the weekend. Particularly given the summery temperatures, regular patrols were carried out across the car park to ensure that no dogs were left behind in parked vehicles. 
Even dogs that couldn’t quite bring themselves to jump were supported and encouraged to find their own way into the water. As a result, all participants had a positive experience.

Dog diving is a dog sport in which dogs jump into a pool of water from a platform. The aim is either to achieve the greatest possible distance or to catch a toy that is thrown or suspended above the water. On command, the dog runs along the jetty and jumps into the water with great momentum. The long jump discipline is particularly popular; in this, the distance from the end of the jetty to the dog’s first contact with the water’s surface is measured. There are also competitions in which dogs jump for a toy or demonstrate their speed in the water. The sport originated in the USA and has since spread to Europe. Dog diving is suitable for many breeds of dog, provided the animals are healthy and enjoy the water. Retrievers, Border Collies and other athletic dogs are particularly well represented in competitions. As training takes place mainly in the water, the sport is considered to be relatively gentle on the joints. At the same time, it promotes the dog’s fitness and self-confidence, as well as strengthening the bond between dog and owner.
