Thomas Nonn confirmed as President

The General Assembly of the European trade association Independent Retail Europe has elected REWE Group Divisional Director Thomas Nonn as President for a further three years.

Thomas Nonn The General Assembly of Independent Retail Europe (IRE) unanimously elected the new Management Board for the period from 2022 to 2025. Thomas Nonn, Divisional Director Independence and Co-operatives at REWE Group, was appointed for a second term as President. The members of the association, including companies and organisations from more than ten countries and various retail sectors, thanked Nonn for his commitment in recent years.

Thomas Nonn, IRE President since October 2019, said: "Independent retail is an important economic pillar that benefits society and consumers alike. At European level, Independent Retail Europe acts as an experienced and influential voice, proactively ensuring that the interests of independent retailers and their organisations are taken into account. I look forward to continuing this successful work together with the Management Board and the Director General over the next three years of my presidency."

Else Groen, Director General of Independent Retail Europe, added: "I have enjoyed working with Thomas Nonn over the last few years. I look forward to continuing our good co-operation. With his great, active commitment, Thomas Nonn is helping to ensure that the association can and will master the current challenges facing our industry. The new term of office begins with a very extensive regulatory agenda and the terrible war in Ukraine. But we will also face up to these challenges."

Independent Retail Europe

Independent Retail Europe is the European umbrella organisation for groups of independent retailers in the food and non-food sector. Its members are groups of independent retailers, associations of groups and service organisations. Independent Retail Europe represents 23 association groups and their 403,900 independent retailers with more than 759,000 points of sale, an annual retail turnover of over 1.314 billion euros, a wholesale turnover of around 484 billion euros and a total of more than 6.620 million employees.

About the person

Thomas Nonn represents the interests of the self-employed within REWE Group as well as at national and European association level. As Divisional Director, he is responsible for the Self-Employed and Co-operative division. Nonn is one of the initiators of the "REWEformer" programme, which has played a key role in shaping cooperation between REWE and independent retailers for 13 years now.
Thomas Nonn is involved at cooperative association level, including on the executive committee of the Mittelstandsverbund - ZGV e.V. (Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises). He has also been President of Independent Retail Europe since 2019.

He is also a member of the Association Council of the DGRV (Deutscher Genossenschafts- und Raiffeisenverband e.V.) and sits on the Management Board of the Förderverein für das Genossenschaftswesen at the University of Cologne as well as the Supervisory Board of the ADG (Akademie Deutscher Genossenschaften) in Montabaur. The manager is also a member of the Management Board of the German Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen Society .
