As a food retailer, REWE has secured the exclusive rights to the four chocolate bars from start-up NuCao for one year. The more sustainable chocolate variant in the flavours Roasted Hazelnut Butter, Almond Butter & Sea Salt, Salted Caramel and Crisp & Crunch was developed in close cooperation with REWE and Naturland.
Delicious and sustainable: the trend is clearly on the rise in the food retail sector - including when it comes to chocolate. REWE is committed to this: following the recently announced cooperation with the cocoa-free chocolate alternative from the start-up Planet A FoodsChoviva, there is now another collaboration: the Leipzig-based organic brand NuCao is the new partner.
The four chocolate varieties Roasted Hazelnut Butter, Almond Butter & Sea Salt, Salted Caramel and Crisp & Crunch have been available on the shelves of REWE stores since the beginning of April. The compact 125 gram bars were developed in close cooperation with REWE and Naturland and are filled with creamy nut butter or crunchy caramel pieces, cornflakes and chopped hazelnuts.
In terms of flavour, the vegan creations reach a level that can compete with conventional milk chocolates, promises manufacturer NuCao. They also fulfil high sustainability standards: In addition to Fairtrade cocoa and vegan organic ingredients, the NuCao bars are Naturland-certified with 100 per cent cocoa from agroforestry. In addition, the bars come in highly recyclable packaging made from 100% paper without aluminium or plastic foil.

Share of organic chocolate on REWE shelves is growing
"For REWE, the cooperation with the young, fresh but above all credible organic brand NuCao offers the opportunity to offer a chocolate that combines indulgence with the highest sustainability standards. The proportion of organic products on the chocolate shelf is still very small, which is why we see this as an opportunity to expand the range," explains Martin F. Wiegand, Senior Category Buyer Chocolate / Biscuits / Seasonal at REWE, explains the new co-operation.
This is why REWE is bringing the second vegan chocolate brand on board as a cooperation after its collaboration with Planet A Foods (ChoViva): "We think it's right and important to set an example in the market when it comes to taking responsibility and offering our customers alternatives. Both collaborations contribute to a particularly sustainable supply chain. Products with the new and innovative raw material "ChoViva" offer our customers a cocoa-free chocolate alternative based on fermented oats and sunflower seeds with a convincing taste experience. The NuCao chocolate bars are from Naturland-certified organic cultivation from 100 per cent agroforestry, which ensures biodiversity in the cultivation area," says Martin Wiegand.
