The latest technology is now making its way into rural areas with the "LieferMichel" pilot project: customers can now order groceries from a REWE store in Michelstadt, Hesse, to their homes using a "Wingcopter" drone. Initially, the drone will fly to the districts of Rehbach and Würzberg. The journey to the take-off point in Michelstadt and the last mile from the landing points to the customers will be carried out by couriers on electric cargo bikes.
Martin Schmied, store manager of the REWE Centre Michelstadt, and his colleague Selin Altinbasak are proud to be part of the pilot project.
We are already testing innovative shopping options with rolling shopping baskets - the "REWE delivery bots" - in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel and the option of autonomous shopping in the "REWE Pick&Go" stores in Cologne, Berlin and Munich. Robert Zores, Chief Digital Innovation Officer (CDIO) at REWE digital, is now looking forward to the use of technological innovations beyond the borders of metropolitan regions with the "LieferMichel": "We have been working on the topic of autonomous mobility in the Research & Innovations department for years and always have one goal in mind - to offer our customers new shopping experiences and make shopping convenient and easy. We are pioneers and trailblazers in the German food retail sector. In addition to numerous projects in urban areas, we are also looking forward to testing services in rural areas, learning together with our project partners and further developing technology and processes."

Residents in Rehbach and Würzberg can order everyday goods such as long-life milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables, tinned food and many other non-refrigerated products via the website www.liefermichel.de and have them delivered to their home on a desired date. The orders are flown by delivery drone to fixed landing points on the outskirts of towns and cities, from where they are transported to the end customer by electric cargo bike. Customers can choose from a wide range of products from the local REWE supermarket.
The "LieferMichel" funding project will initially run until the end of 2023 and will be continued if successful.
The "LieferMichel" project is a pilot project of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and Wingcopter. Other partners are REWE, Vodafone, Riese & Müller and the city of Michelstadt. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) as part of the "Innovative Air Mobility" funding guideline.
