The REWE Group cooperatives
Origin, home and heart

From a purchasing co-operative of owner-managed merchant shops to the heart of REWE Group: that, in a nutshell, is the history of the five regional co-operatives, some of which are over 100 years old. Together with FÜR SIE eG, they form the pillars of REWE Group today. Let us introduce them.

REWE Nord-Ost eG

History

  • 1918 Foundation of EGEMI (Einkaufsgenossenschaft eingetragener Milchhändler) as a co-operative company for milk and food retailers based in Berlin
  • 1953 Start of membership in the REWE Group with change of name from EGEMI to REWE-EGEMI Lebensmittelvertriebs GmbH
  • 1954 Foundation of REWE Hildesheim
  • 1973 Merger of REWE Hildesheim with REWE Harz-Heide, Mascherode and REWE Hannover, Großburgwedel to form REWE Großhandel eG Harsum. Relocation of the company headquarters from Hildesheim to Harsum
  • 1987 Relocation of REWE Harsum to Lehrte, the central location of the REWE shops
  • 2005 Merger of Rewe Großhandel e.G. Harsum and REWE-EGEMI GmbH, Großbeeren (Berlin) to form REWE Nord-Ost eG and relocation of headquarters to Lehrte
  • 2012 Relocation of headquarters from Lehrte to Teltow (Brandenburg)

REWE Nord-Ost eG currently has around 630 independent REWE and local retailers from the REWE North and East regions as members. The purpose of the co-operative is the economic promotion of its members. REWE Nord-Ost eG is a shareholder or member of

REWE Hungen eG

History

  • 1951 Founded in Bad Nauheim by nine retailers as the purchasing co-operative REWE Lebensmittel-Großhandel e.G.m.b.H Butzbach/Hessen
  • 1966 Construction of the new warehouse in Hungen/Hesse. The current headquarters and REWE Handels eG Hungen were established.
  • 1967 Transfer of the active merchandise business to REWE Vertriebs KG
  • 2003 Opening of the warehouse location in Breuna

The Hungen co-operative has around 490 members. These are independent REWE and nahkauf retailers from the REWE Centre region and, for historical reasons, some from the North, East and South regions.
The main task is to promote the members by means of:

  • Subsidy for investments in the supermarket
  • Payment of a trainee subsidy
  • Dividend payment on the subscribed shares
  • Offering an annual national study trip

The regional co-operative secures its earning power by renting and leasing supermarkets and investing in logistics locations.
REWE Hungen is represented by: Michael Fricke, Sven Gippert, Günter Götzelmann and Eileen Scholz as Management Board:members as well as the Supervisory Board members Sven Schäfer, Michael Fröhlich, Thomas Höfling, Thomas Nonn, Patrick Franz, Bayram Travaci, Volker Treude, Bernd Kaffenberger and Martin Obermann.

REWE West eG

History

  • 1922 Foundation of the "Erka Westkaufgenossenschaft der Kolonialwarenhändler von Erkelenz und Umgebung" by 12 retail traders
  • 1922 to 2003 Affiliation of more than 40 co-operatives
  • 2004 Merger of REWE Großhandel Mainz-Koblenz eG, Koblenz, REWE Verwaltung Rhein Sieg eG, Efferen, and REWE Großhandel eG, Erkelenz.
  • 2009 Merger of REWE Großhandel eG, Betzdorf, into REWE West

In addition to promoting its 262 members, REWE West eG today focuses on property and investment management.

REWE Süd/Südwest eG

History

  • 1903 Founded as GeKaWe in Stuttgart, 15 members
  • 1983 GeKaWe-REWE becomes REWE Süd Großhandel e.G., in the same year merger with REWE Ulm e.G.
  • 2006 Expansion of the business areas to include the southern region and change of name to REWE Süd/Südwest e.G.
  • 2018 Number of members reaches 400

The purpose of the cooperative is the economic promotion of independent retail businesses, in particular REWE retailers, on the basis of the REWE Group's "Travemünde Declaration" of 2007. The cooperative's task is to represent the interests of its members vis-à-vis the REWE Group, to operate trading companies, to acquire and operate commercial enterprises, shareholdings and to acquire and manage real estate.

REWE Dortmund Wholesale eG

History

  • 1913 Foundation of the "Krone" colonial goods purchasing co-operative by 15 Dortmund grocers
  • 1926 Merger to form the "Vereinigung der Lebensmittel-Großhandels-Genossenschaften von Rheinland und Westfalen" (Revisionsverband der Westkaufgenossenschaft, REWE)
  • 1935 Adoption of the REWE name
  • 1956 Foundation of DOEGO (Dortmunder Einkaufsgenossenschaft für Obst und Gemüse)
  • 1958 Commissioning of the central butcher's shop and inauguration of the new premises on Asselner Hellweg

REWE Dortmund's headquarters is the REWE service centre in Dortmund-Asseln, from where day-to-day operations are managed. The sales area of the approximately 400 supermarkets is North Rhine-Westphalia - with the Ruhr region, the Lower Rhine region and the Sauerland and Münsterland regions forming the focal points. The stores are mainly operated by independent retailers. They are particularly interested in marketing products from the region in order to support the local economy, secure local jobs and keep transport routes as short as possible.
More than 20,500 employees work in REWE Dortmund's stores, while over 2,200 ensure smooth operations in the wholesale, logistics, administration and production departments in Dortmund.

Für Sie is a cross-sector network with over 300 companies and 68,000 sales outlets. Thanks to the cooperation with the REWE Group, customers from wholesale, food retail, specialised beverage retailers and hairdressing wholesalers have access to the REWE warehouse locations and a complete food and non-food range with more than 40,000 items and over 4,000 contract suppliers in drop shipments.
