A significant increase in revenue, a close-knit team and a top team: the retailers of REWE Dortmund had every reason to be optimistic about the future at their Annual General Meeting.
A shortage of skilled labour, rising freight prices or the dynamically developing commodity markets: REWE Dortmund is not immune to the current global political conditions. Nevertheless, business at the 355 REWE stores in the Ruhr and Rhine regions is going well, as the top management and Supervisory Board stated at this year's Annual General Meeting of the cooperative.
Lionel Souque
"Despite these challenges, things are going very well throughout REWE Group and at REWE - especially because we have competent retailers and employees and are pursuing a clear strategy together," said Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group, who travelled from Cologne to attend the meeting. The CEO mentioned the latest innovations in the field of digitalisation, such as AI-supported market and product range planning or new digital convenience formats, as examples of the pursuit of strategic goals. His conclusion: "Technology is important and will simplify the future of the food retail sector and create new opportunities - but food retail is and will remain a business by people for people in logistics, in the stores and at the centres.
Overall, Lionel Souque explicitly praised the cohesion within the Group: "It has strengthened the REWE Combine that REWE Dortmund is part of it."
Stefan Lenk
Stefan Lenk, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of REWE Dortmund, could only agree: "Despite this challenging market environment and the geopolitical conditions, which were even more difficult than in the previous business year, REWE Dortmund Großhandel eG can once again look back on a successful business year in which the very good result of the previous year, measured by the balance sheet profit, was once again exceeded. With our Management Board, the management and the entire team newly appointed by the Supervisory Board last year, we are in top shape."
Erich Stockhausen
Erich Stockhausen had brought along the latest facts and figures from the various business segments for the 140 members in the Börsensaal on Asselner Hellweg. In conclusion, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of REWE Group emphasised the importance of cohesion: "Let us, together with the retailers, continue to move the great REWE ship forward."
Hanno Rieger, who moved to REWE Dortmund at the end of 2023, was impressed by the spirit of the cooperative after his first few months in his new role as Chairman of the Management Board: "We have an incredible number of employees who are proud to be here with us and a very strong sense of cohesion within the company.
Hanno Rieger
But this also shows that tradition is always an obligation, that we care about the future and that we are and will remain innovative and continue to use our unity with all our strength to move forward together." REWE Dortmund currently operates and supplies 355 stores. The majority - 234 - are operated by independent retailers.
In view of the solid development, it came as no surprise that the meeting unanimously re-elected the members of the cooperative's Supervisory Board who were standing for re-election. Stefan Lenk, Reinhard Amshove and Michael Krummenerl were confirmed in their positions for a further three years, as were the Advisory Board members Katrin Feiertag, Regina Fritsche, Sylvia Stilleke, Jimmy Gawdi, Thorsten Sliwik and Daniel Peeters.
25 years at REWE Dortmund
REWE Dortmund traditionally honours long-standing members of the cooperative at its Annual General Meeting. Friedhelm Conrad (2nd from right) followed his brother Udo's example in September 1998 and started his own business in Dorsten-Hervest. He later opened a second store in Gelsenkirchen. José Luís Carneiro Barbosa 's (2nd from left) career path led him from training as a retail salesman at kaufpark in 1998 to opening his own shop in Witten. in 2004, Barbosa and his wife Michaela took over a new location in Iserlohn.
