Five years of Scan&Go
Win-win for customers and the market
by Annika Müller und Lukas Reuten

in 2019, REWE merchant Ingo Istas launched an exciting pilot project at his store in Cologne-Rodenkirchen: for the first time in German grocery retail, customers were able to scan products directly at the shelf using a hand scanner or smartphone, pack them in their own bag and pay at the checkout without unpacking them. Shopping has never been faster.

Today, REWE offers Scan&Go in over 1,000 stores - and is still a pioneer in the German food retail sector with this technology. To mark the 5th anniversary, five store managers whose customers make particularly heavy use of Scan&Go tell us why they would not want to do without Scan&Go.

Oliver Heinzel "It's important to move with the times"
Oliver Heinzel's REWE store in Ludwigsfelde is one of the stores in Germany where most customers regularly use Scan&Go for their shopping. The retailer has been offering the service since the store opened. "I think it's important to keep up with the times and offer our customers the latest technology," says the retailer. "We've even received feedback from customers that they switched from the competition to us because of Scan&Go. Not only does it make shopping much faster, it's also much more relaxed for families with children: The children are happy to be able to scan while the adults pack in peace and quiet." When asked why Scan&Go is so successful in his store, Oliver Heinzel points to his team: "All of our employees are enthusiastic about the technology and also use it for their own shopping. This means that every one of us can help customers if they have a question."

Sophie Kluwe From toddler to senior:in
REWE saleswoman Sophie Kluwe has had Scan&Go on board since the reopening of her store in Trebbin. "Before every decision, I ask myself how customers can benefit from it. With Scan&Go, customers, who are very price-sensitive these days, can keep an eye on their shopping costs at all times," says Sophie Kluwe. A decision that has proven its worth. From young families with small children to senior citizens - in Sophie Kluwe's store, Scan&Go is used intensively by all customer groups. Almost one in three purchases in her store is made with Scan&Go. In fact, demand is now so high that the shop assistant is considering integrating a second lending station. "There are times when all 27 devices are out and about," she reports. "Shopping should also be an experience for our customers. Scan&Go is a great tool for this."

Julian Quantz Help in the fight against the shortage of skilled labour
"I think it's important that we promote technology and continue to improve it," says Julian Quantz, store manager at the REWE store in Maintal/Hochstedt. "In other countries, such as the Netherlands, this is already common practice." For Julian Quantz, this is particularly important with a view to the future. "The correct deployment of human resources is one of the most important future tasks in retail. Scan&Go can help combat the shortage of skilled labour. The aim is expressly not to cut staff," says the store manager. "But it's not just our customers who save time with Scan&Go. The checkout process is also simplified for employees."

Mario Denter This is already making itself felt at the REWE Centre Rodenbach, which is also one of the Scan&Go frontrunners: "Scan&Go has helped us to relieve our checkout staff. Our colleagues now have more time to devote to other important tasks and complete them stress-free," reports store manager Mario Denter. "So far, it has always paid off to break new ground. Even if it's difficult at first or requires investment."
