Unusually Irish

In film, Ireland has always been overshadowed by Great Britain. For some years now, however, the Emerald Isle has been developing its own luminosity and shining directly onto the big screen. While Martin McDonagh's "The Banshees of Inisherin" was a fine example of this at the beginning of this year, two more will follow in November. Irishman Daryl McCormack is an absolute discovery, both in the cinema and on TV. Together with Julie Delpy and Richard E. Grant, he delivers a suspenseful trio in the thriller "The Lesson". Idyllically quiet, but also a little mysterious, is the title heroine in "The Quiet Girl". Shot largely in Irish Gaelic, the drama entered the Oscar race for Ireland in 2023. If you need a full load of German humour to balance things out, you should stick to Das Erste in November, where Loriot fever is breaking out to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Cinema 1
The Lesson

A Frenchwoman, a Brit and an Irishman in a German-British co-production: the story behind "The Lesson" is unusual in itself. Filmed on a breathtakingly beautiful and spacious estate in Wentorf near Hamburg, the intimate drama about a famous author, his wife and a young ambitious writer becomes ever more closely interwoven into a psychological thriller. If Delpy and Grant are already in a category of their own as an eccentric academic couple, Daryl McCormack cuts a literally magnificent figure as the third member of the pair.

Daryl McCormack
After "The Lesson" at the latest, you should remember the name Daryl McCormack. However, some people have been familiar with the son of an Irish woman and an African-American father, who was born in Nenagh, Ireland, in 1993, since "My Hours with Leo" (2022). As the title character and call boy, he tickles the comedic highlights out of Emma Thompson. Even series such as "Peaky Blinders", "Bad Sisters" and, most recently, the six-part Irish adoption drama "Woman in the Wall" cannot do without McCormack's boyish charm.

The Quiet Girl

9-year-old Cait is sent to live with distant relatives for the summer. Although the quiet girl is welcomed there with open arms, Cait soon realises that her host parents are in a subdued mood.
If Catherine Clinch with the expressive eyes in her pretty face was a sensation in her camera debut alone, the language of the film is in no way inferior. "The Quiet Girl" is subtitled "An Cailín Ciúin" because both English and Irish are spoken, which gives the few dialogues an even deeper meaning.

Colm Bairéad
Frowned upon by the Christian monks and banned under English rule, Irish Gaelic has nevertheless survived to this day. But because it is only spoken by 2% of the population in Ireland, director Colm Bairéad decided to establish Irish in the local media. Born in Dublin in 1981, he has shot all of his documentaries in Irish, so it made sense to do the same for his feature film debut. "The Quiet Girl" won the Kplus section of the 72nd Berlinale in 2022 and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Non-English Language Film in 2023.

Radiooooo

A very special place for the ears is the Internet "Radiooooo". Not only can you click through 120 years of musical creation, but the music is also sorted by country. So it's just as easy to linger acoustically in the Argentinian 20s as it is in Ireland in the 80s. But what makes "Radiooooo" outstanding is the community. It not only listens, but also collects. The French DJ Benjamin Moreau and his consortium take care of the copyrights and the feed into the web station.
