Since January 2023, a superordinate Logistics and Supply Chain Management (SCM) Board has been meeting under the leadership of Management Board member Peter Maly (COO). The logistics managers responsible for eight REWE Group companies meet six times a year to exchange ideas across all business areas. One of the central questions that has occupied the Board since last year: Which alternative drive is the best solution for REWE Group - and its climate targets?
"At REWE Group, we are making many adjustments at the same time in order to achieve our climate targets. Logistics can make a significant contribution to this - but only if we break down silos, utilise synergies and work with all units on a joint decarbonisation strategy," says Peter Maly, who is responsible for Logistics and Supply Chain as a member of the REWE Group Management Board. Our lorry fleet is a major lever here." In January 2023, REWE Group Logistik launched its first cross-company and cross-country strategy project, the 'Alternative Drives' project.
In an extensive test, REWE, PENNY, Retail International, Lekkerland, REWE Dortmund and the REWE delivery service are jointly investigating the question of which alternative lorry drive we should rely on across the Group in the future. To this end, electric, hydrogen and hybrid lorries are in use throughout Europe and are collecting data on parameters such as fuel consumption, charging and refuelling times and range per fill-up. "While an electric lorry covers many mountainous routes in Austria, it achieves completely different ranges in the predominantly flat Netherlands. Subsidies and charging infrastructures are also different in every country. These examples show how important it is that we don't look at supply chain challenges in isolation," says Peter Maly.
"It is precisely through international cooperation and the many business units involved that we can collect much better data and insights for the evaluation of alternative drive systems and their use in REWE Group logistics." The project group is currently deriving recommendations for action from the collected data and existing framework conditions in order to get one step closer to the target image of the 'lorry of the future'.
The 'Alternative Drives' project is just one example of the overarching collaboration between the Logistics and SCM Board. In addition to decarbonisation, the Board is also looking for joint solutions to challenges such as fragile supply chains and a shortage of skilled workers. For example, the logistics managers from REWE, PENNY, REWE Dortmund, toom Baumarkt DIY store, Lekkerland, Retail International, REWE Group Buying and REWE Group Fruchtlogistik have already launched a joint recruiting and onboarding strategy. By pooling purchasing, sharing best practices and taking an overall strategic view, the merger should also help to achieve economic advantages in the future. "Despite all the differences in the individual organisational units, we always end up talking about the same topics. That's why the dialogue on the Logistics and SCM Board is important for all of us," says Christian Hörner, Managing Director Logistics at BILLA in Austria.
